Commentary for June 26, 2013:
No, that's not a typo, Kochanski did say "Gods" - plural - "save the Martian Confederate Republic". You see, centuries of independence from Earth has led to the development of new religions on Mars and the big monotheistic religions of Earth at this time are not the dominant religions on Mars. Instead, most religious Martians fall into some branch of Neo-Classicalism, which worships modernised ideas of the Olympian gods, while borrowing heavily from the salvation narrative of Earth's messianic faiths. Some denominations see each of the gods as separate entities, as in antiquity, but most see them either as avatars of the one god or separate entities derived from a single prime mover or creator god. Neo-Classicalism has a presence on Earth and the other inhabited worlds of the Sol system, but it is most prominent on Mars and the Jovian moons, which were colonies of Mars.
Addendum for October 3, 2019:
In order to bring the format of the earlier chapters into line with Chapter 7 onwards, I’ve made an updated version of this page, which is larger, with clearer text. Hopefully, this will make the earlier chapters easier to read.
