For some reason, this reminds me of a book I barely remember reading as a kid. It was about a sentient kingdom of rats... I can't remember the name, but my cousin loved it and it was about a medieval civilization of rats or mice, and that's as much as I can remember. Did you ever read it?
Hnn, no I don't think I read a book like that....
But stories featuring small animals like mice os squirrels going on big adventures are not so uncommon,
we even have the Secret of Nimh movie that's all about that premise hehe
So I didn't draw inspiration from one source but probably from a lot of things like that that I've seen before *grin*
