Well, it's a hyper-futuristic world, there's all manner of reasons why people would have chips in their skulls.

Hopefully they aren't has mandatory like the career chips in Futurama.

At a solid guess, it's not specifically "A" chip, but the external interface for something along the lines of a full-on neural net / mesh interface system, allowing them to have access to their version of the internet immediately. Depending upon their level of advancement, it might be also home to a Muse software, a personal assistant software running on the neural net, allowing it to be your secretary, reader, etc. It could be far more advanced even than this, and allow for full-sensory AR/VR/XR (Experience Recording) and transmission, and an immersive, full-sensory net without the need for things like a gloves/goggles (Glo-go) interface.

Oh, indeed, mostly because of its' WONDERFUL extrapolation from current trends both socially and technologically. I can't stand the SYSTEM, but I do adore the setting and fluff text.

I definitely agree. The setting is so rich and detailed to borrow from, even if I don't use the underlying mechanics.

Between Eclipse Phase (which maintains an intrinsic (and in my opinion important!) focus upon humanity) and Orion'sArm.com, which handles the deep-future, posthuman/transhuman stuff, I'd say that there's a good bit of stuff to draw upon for such (though, note, I find OA.com to be RUTHLESSLY AI-centric and indeed to removed FROM human to actually make good stories to which we, as baseline humans, can relate to).

I only have passing familiarity with OA, but it can always serve as the basis of one of those unfathomably alien post-singularity encounters.

It has some things of use in less-extreme transhumanism. I rather blatantly snagged the term "Rianth" from them (an acronym for Recombinant Intelligent Anthropomorph, ie. a genetically engineered furry), and found some of their descriptions of AI are usable for when you DON'T want to reduce humans and other baselines to interesting aquarium pets. It's been inspirational when you back it up from its' end product, honestly, and a lot of the things from Eclipse Phase can really benefit from the additional perspective.

It's the combination of both these sources that I draw upon heavily when thinking my way through Feretta's work.
