Episode 2: Breaking Barriers
WHUP!
Jenga let out a muffled yip as the unexpected knock at the front door woke him.
WHUP!
“Coming!” Jen shouted, scrambling out of his bed and to the door. He yanked it open and barely dodged the visitor’s fist as he swung it at where the door was. Jen let out a muffled yelp, and the visitor quickly started stammering, which sounded funny in his deep, throaty voice.
“Ah! I-I-I-I’m sorry!! A-are you alright?”
Jen nodded, a fist to his mouth. He studied the visitor up and down. He was a gray wolf, like himself. He was wearing an open short-sleeved button-up plaid shirt, with a blue t-shirt underneath. He had blue jeans on, and while he stammered, he fussed with his hair. His glasses caught Jen’s attention, and he pointed absentmindedly at them, until he noticed the other wolf had stopped stuttering and was looking at him nervously.
“Eep! Sorry, your glasses caught my attention…I don’t see many wolves wearing any…” Jen said meekly, blushing very softly.
The larger wolf chuckled. “Ah. I was a little afraid you were going to punch me or something, heheh.” The two of them laughed a little, until Jen remembered to ask what the wolf was here for.
“Well, there’s a ‘Room For Rent’ sign on your window, and I need a place to stay. I was interested in taking a look around.” He grinned softly, “Name’s Josh, by the way. Yours?” He held out a paw to shake.
“Jenga, but you can call me Jen.” He silently reprimanded himself as he shook the Josh’s hand. “Come in, I’ll show you the room. The other roommates are out and about today.” He led Josh down the small hallway that led to the four different rooms, stopping at the last one on the right. He opened the door, signaling for the other wolf to go first. He nodded his thanks, and stepped inside.
The room wasn’t all that big, but to Josh’s expression, Jenga though he perceived it like an open-air atrium. The room was bare except for an antique nightstand and a twin bed.
“You can move your own bed and mattress in here when you move in - if you take the room of course, I mean. We’re on the first floor, so it should be easier.” Jenga explained.
Josh nodded in understanding. “How much a month?”
Jen did come quick calculations in his head. “Let’s see…the rent is $500 a month, and with Drez and Evan both paying $250 right now…Hmm…I’d say that $175 a month is reasonable?”
Josh turned to stare at Jen. “That cheap?”
Jen nodded. “You have a job?”
“Uh-huh. I work at the Odd’s End’s pawn shop. I can pay the rent, and I’d like the room. I can move in the day after tomorrow, if that’s alright with you.” He looked Jen straight in the eyes.
Jenga stared back. He couldn’t resist this wolf. But f he made the decision now, his roommates may reject it later. But this wolf was so charming…They’d both love him.
Jenga nodded. “That works.”
“You just decided for all of us?” Drez was pissed, and for once in his life, it was at Jenga.
Jen huddled lower into himself, his ears flattening against his skull. “I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I d-didn’t see any h-harm in it…”
Drez sighed and massaged his temples. He couldn’t believe this. Some charming wolf shows up at the door, and suddenly Jenga does whatever is asked of him. Now, they were going to be stuck with that wolf for a roommate. He just hoped that this wolf knew what would happen if he tried to take Jen’s emotions for a joyride. “Fine! We’ll let him stay. But he’s your responsibility, Jen.”
Jen visibly relaxed, slumping farther into his spot on the couch. “He’s moving in the day after tomorrow.” He muttered.
“Me’n Drez are both out most of the day then. It’ll just be you two…” Evan’s deep voice trailed off, a hint of jealousy in it that he hoped Jen didn’t catch.
He didn’t. “I can handle myself, guys. And I’m strong enough to help him move in.”
Drezda frowned. Sometimes Jen’s appealing innocence got annoying. Especially when he was oblivious to things right in front of him. “Alright. Just…be careful, bro.”
Jen nodded, slumping down into the couch and curling up in a ball. Soon, he was snoring.
Drez lightly laid a blanket over his prone form. He loved how Jen looked when he slept, except for how he always frowned.. It was cute. Curled up in a ball, like a cat. How ironic, that he’s a wolf, he thought.
Moving in day for Josh:
“…And don’t do anything Evan or I would do. That can only end badly.”
Jenga laughed loudly, waving as Drez and Evan headed out to their cars to head to their separate workplaces.
About twenty minutes later, there was a knock at the door. Jen scrambled up, reaching the door at the same moment he had last time, but catching Josh’s fist this time. He chuckled and shushed the large wolf’s apologies. They stared at each other for a few minutes, before shaking themselves out of it. “So, what’re we carrying in first?”
Boxes. Big boxes. Small boxes. Mid-sized boxes. Short boxes. Tall boxes. Long boxes. Skinny boxes. Wide boxes. So many boxes that they carried in.
They began unpacking Josh’s stuff. Jen marveled at how he could pack so much into all these boxes. Model airplanes, a computer, a keyboard, pillows, shirts, jeans, everything one may, or may not, need.
Finally, they finished. Jen stretched his arms, reaching them high about his head. Then suddenly, Josh’s strong arms reaches gently around his waist. He tensed up momentarily, then settled into his chest, holding his hands.
They stood like that for a while, just the two of them. Jen was smiling, bright and big. He couldn’t remember being this happy in…forever.
Josh pulled him softly down to the bed, until Jen was laying his head against his chest. It was so comforting and warm. He never wanted it to end.
Jenga chuckled softly to himself. He felt alive with Josh. It was overpowering, his way of being…him. He was so strong, and loving, and he knew how to make Jen happy.
It was late, and some of the houses Drezda had delivered pizza to weren’t the nicest. He was annoyed. He never took it out on Jenga, but he might tonight. He saw the door to the last bedroom open, so he walked to it. He opened it enough to see fully through…
And couldn’t bear to wake them.
The two wolves looked so at peace that it almost hurt Drez to look at them. He couldn’t wake them up. Not if his life depended on it. Not because Josh’s paws were wrapped protectively around Jen. Not because Jen was hugging Josh tightly in his sleep.
Because Jenga was smiling.
Drez closed the door quietly, and went to his own room. He lay on his bed for a while, thinking. He felt closer than family to Jenga. He wanted to be the one who Jen was resting on top of right then.
Too bad that wolf got to him first… Was his last thought before he fell asleep.
