Not trimming, carefull combing.. mix 1 part waterbase glue with 10-15 parts water and carefully comb the fur down.. it'll retain it's leingth while giving a sleeker shape and it's leingth.. also with it being mostly water, it'll evaporate leaving only the tiniest bits of glue, so the fur will not mat up either.

it'll also help stop the head from getting shaggy with use if the fur stays where you put it.. i've heard of people doing similar with gel or hair spray, but some sprays and gels discolor or even melt synthetics. so whatever you use if you do.. use carefully and as little as posible.. you MAY even be able to get the effect with just a straight comb and water.

oh.. and test on scrap fur first to get used to it.. you'll want a fine toothed straight comb, maybe some old toothbrush/paintbrush to apply, and posibly a hair dryer.. it's like taming hair with gel after getting up in the morning. use too much and you get a shell of hair, don't use any and the hair will still be better then before the comb, but will tend to go the way it wants over time.

the other benefits.. you can leave fur long but flatten it out to create a sleeker coat in places like along the bridge of the nose or around the eyes. without trimming down to a short haired design.
