Thirty years ago, I used to work security at a Navy Research Base. I spent a few months on Third Shift, and one of my favorite posts was a gate near the end of the city street. A mocking bird would sing most of the night -- nice when you couldn't play a radio on post. One night the mocking bird suddenly went silent.
Seconds later, there were two shots from across the street -- from very different handguns.
I was already crouched on the floor with my hand on the butt of my own weapon. Funny how you get attuned to things and become sensitized to changes.
