We struck the barrier and stepped back, praying that, for once, events would transpire as planned. The crack we made in the barrier, rather than repairing itself as before, started to spread, much to our delight. It grew rapidly, branching out like a growing tree and reaching hundreds of feet in the air before large chunks of the barrier began to fall and dissipate into thin air. The difference in air pressure and temperature as fresh air came into the town for the first time in weeks was immediately noticeable. Looking into the ever-growing hole and observing the sunset outside, relief washed over us.
We had well and truly saved the town. Once again, we could say that we won.
This is a scene from the end of the twentieth in-game day of my current Pathfinder campaign with players
MonsterMutt,
Serophous,
Marshtomphappy,
CaitSith and
Quinn—I was DMing at that time. Having teleported into a town for an unknown reason, the party found that the town had erected a magical barrier around its perimeter weeks before our arrival, and only the town government knew how to dispel it. News of an organization of assassins in town, however, led to fears that these dangerous criminals could escape into the world at large, and thus the party was tasked with taking down the organization before the town ran out of supplies to feed those it had trapped alongside the killers. After running into no end of trouble, the party managed to stumble upon the ne'er-do-wells, dismantle what remained of this particular sect of the assassins, and grant escape to the townsfolk. The party now heads out into an unfamiliar world with a goal in mind but no set path toward getting there, leaving it to chase a few precious clues in the hopes of saving more than a town.
Thanks to
Quinn for this image! It was rather impactful at the time he drew it, and I'm proud to say that we made it through that arc and can continue into more plots.
