Informing. Not educating. It's entirely possible to disagree but remain polite. I personally do not care what others feel uneasy or uncomfortable with when, as I stated before, to hold on to old bigotry is to entice hatred and judgements of people.
It's like that one girl who drew that fanart of the Steven Universe character, and got endlessly bulliedand harassed for "fatphobia" or some such nonsense.
Peopleneed to learn to let go of their hatred. History happened, there's no changing it. But there's also no reason why we can't aspire to be better than those who lived hundreds of years before us who didn't have the benefit of our modern knowledge or morals.
Even in just art. It's fantasy. It can be whatever we want it to be. A cowboy sitting at a campfire with the natives, learning to appreciate their culture in ways that others of the time period may not have.
And I personally feel that if anyone had a problem with that ideal; the ideal that all people regardless of skin color or culture could come together in mutual respect and learn from eachother...if anyone claims to have a deep seated cultural issue with that ideal, then I can most assuredly point out to you a true bigot who is incapable of treating others like equals or worse...who WANTS to stoke the fires of racism.
I guess my whole point is, it's fantasy. We are always free to tweak the specifics to suit our tastes and moral guidelines as we saw fit.
Hell, in this fandom you have people eating eachother for sexual gratification, so you know...we're not the most morally superior bunch.

Educating actually, you don’t have to care about what other people feel, however, you should have the maturity and decency to respect it.
None of what I said was “holding” onto bigotry, when In fact I was just explaining that the precontact attire was important and sacred to me. The pieces drawn was just to work with designs and show my culture, being anishinaabe.
Which is part of the reason why i declined your idea, respectfully.
It’s not holding onto hatred and bigotry, it’s just culturally inappropriate.
The Steven universe issue does not come close to indigenous issues. The problems that happened to that lady just happened to be unfortunate, but it also has nothing to do with the work I do with drawing pieces with regalia or precontact.
Fanart is fine, as long as there are no real cultural ties that can harm or be hurtful towards a majority of people.
A few people being mad because of fat phobia is not relevant to this topic.
Also You’re right, people do need to let go of their hatred. And people also need to be educated and learn about another’s culture and livelihood.
History has happened, but the effects of history still affects all of us indigenous people.
People outside of that won’t entirely understand but if they want to learn and educate themselves, then that’s when the present will be putting a step forward instead of backwards.
Understanding why one is uncomfortable when it comes to who they are is a step forward.
Art isn’t always fantasy, indigenous people aren’t fantasy. We’re very real.
Want to know fantasy? The history books in a lot of portrayed in books as Indians who helped the pilgrims, or Indians who agreeably and happily skipped to their new and fantastic homes on the reservations.
Fantasy’s are coverups of the real world.
A happy face plastered over something damaged and real.
I have a problem with it, all of indigenous women and men have a problem with it. If you were to dress as a cowboy at a powwow, you won’t be treated with respect and high acclaim. There are some things that are only for us. It’s who we are.
We are just like everyone else, but there are things spiritually that we as a people share with our brothers and sisters, cousins and aunts, uncles and grandparents.
I wouldn’t call myself a bigot, friend. If educating someone who doesn’t know the importance of my own culture, makes me a bigot. Than I can for sure say that there is something mistaken in your statement. If you don’t have a culture of your own, then you probably won’t completely understand unless you make the effort to respectfully and to willingly understand.
Just from your statement I can tell that you fail to respect, and understand why, makes you a bigot, the prime example of discrimination, you’re biased towards your own world of opinions and words.
And I have been nothing but respectful to you, and you had the bold recklessness to call me a bigot.
It’s not fantasy to me, indigenous people are not fantasy. Real people, with real problems.
So don’t try talking to me and gaslighting me into thinking I don’t know what I’m talking about and you coming in here and basically insulting my family and friends by thinking we’re some made up cowboys and Indians scenario. News flash. We are not.
Thank you for reading, I will not be replying to another message about this issue. It’s a waste of my time and this last message was just one to truly educate you on everything you said, was simply uneducated, ignorant, and uncultured.
And just a little reality check; I believe gossip follows you simply because you hold this careless, and backward mindset~

You can't educate anyone on history when you yourself don't actually know history.
Furthermore, holding on to this bigoted mindset that 2 peoples simply cannot get along simply because of cultural differences, then calling ME backwards?
Hipocrisy, plain and simple.
I don't associate with bigots. Have a good life.

End of the real tea
Context on “you’re a bigot for not letting me insult your culture” I didn’t want to do the cowboy and Indian idea. Despite it making me uncomfortable and it being disrespectful He continued to make his point that i was a bigot for not allowing this.
It’s basically what he was implying and it is a comic, comics are always exaggerated and comical.

Wow... that's a special level of willful ignorance right there.
In doing fiction writing, I try extremely hard to create my own tribal cultures, when they are called for by plot. They may draw some inspiration from the native tribes of North America, but I do a lot of research to make sure that I don't use anything actually used by those tribes, and I don't imply that they are from any given native tribal culture. It's this thing called 'respect'. It's also not being lazy with writing, but that's a whole 'nother rant. There may be some similarities (in any pre-industrial hunter/gatherer society, Leather is probably going to be used in some form or fashion as articles of clothing, simply because it is a byproduct of hunting for meat, as an example), but that doesn't give you license to copy styles entirely.
If an artist isn't comfortable doing something, you either find another artist who can, or you try something else. You talk, and share information, and come to a more complete understanding of the topics at hand. You don't get your panties in a twist and start ranting on a topic you are very CLEARLY ignorant on.

Now that I think of it, none of my friends who happen to be native peoples (not all american) are comfortable producing "cultural" clothes on demand. An event, sure, but not on demand.
I keep running in my mind how this could've worked out differently... and all I can think of is a commission of a cowboy standing in a modern city looking very confused

HOW was that in any way disrespectful?
Just 'cause 'cowboys' were a few/alot of years separate from precontact isn't in any way insulting.
Best REPRESENTATION of native american I ever saw was a dude in the SCA who used his own genetic history by reenacting a jaguar warrior. his story was that he was taken back to europe and learned to fight in armour there...awesomeness.
The art could have shown an ojibwa who had traveled to explore the wider world and have bumped into the cowboy...o' say someone/where near the dakotas...that's not too inconceivable a distance...hell you could have been hanging out with the sioux...
Just wonderin'...
I REALLY don't see ANY insult OR disrespect...

While I personally have no culture of my own I still think cliche portrayals like Cowboys and "Indians" a generally bad idea. So I sympathize with you not wanting to stereotype it up for money. Very respectable. Casually depicting other cultures is how stereotypes are made. Like the whole scalping thing was false on the western frontier to scare people into the manifest destiny thing. I hope you can spread more positive cultural awareness through your art. A lot of people need to know that heritage is important to a lot of people around the world.
