Updated reference for my resident nextgen villain. I still love this girl despite the fact she is a terrible, terrible pony and will not cause good things for my other characters.

Personality:
Bereft of most meaningful socialization or friends, epically powerful magic, and the means to manipulate it to a hair's breadth, Gamma Ray is a devious and malicious pony who only wishes to see pain in others around her. In a way, she is both fueled by revenge and not at the same time. While nopony has ever actually wronged her, she's never known real kindness outside of the days when she was still very young. Her vicious nature actually comes from how she was raised. When Gamma Ray was still a small filly, having very often magical accidents and causing unintentional destruction due to sheer magical buildup and potential, her father Sunburst left her mother, finally seeing past the nostalgia of his childhood friendship with Starlight and the puppy love caused by it. This left poor Gamma Ray in the hooves solely of her intensely distraught mother.
Scorned by a second rejection from her dearest childhood friend and love, as well as feeling deeply betrayed by Twilight for having 'stolen' Sunburst, the friendship lessons Starlight took in her past melted away, consumed by her jealousy and alledged betrayal. Knowing however that Twilight Sparkle had stopped her before, straight out vengeance wasn't an option. Instead Starlight turned her frustrations and lust for revenge towards her already fairly emotionally screwed up daughter and trained her for the purpose of her revenge. Gamma Ray surpassed even Starlight's wildest dreams of power, however, the blood of two very strongly magically gifted unicorns flowing in her veins, and broke away from her mother's control. This training filled her head with dissonance against friendship and overpowering apathy. Gamma Ray nowadays seeks only to fill the void inside her by seeing all of Equestria quavering at her hooves. Gamma Ray greatly enjoys seeing others in pain, whether physical or emotional, as well as intense stress. Whether it makes her feel better about her childhood or because she truly is a broken mare is uncertain. What is, certain, however, is that Gamma's Ray future holds much pain and suffering for all, and can end only with her destruction.
While her magic is truly epic in scale, harnessing solar and celestial rays to fuel her power, it does have some limiitations. During daylight hours, Gamma Ray's powers are nigh limitless, as she has a constant source to draw from. After darkness settles, she can store some of her stored energy, but it can be depleted. Upon depletion Gamma Ray's magical powers drop down to match simply that of a slightly-more-than-talented unicorn, certainly not that of the typical hellfury she behaves like.
Relationships:
All others are pawns in Gamma Ray's plans or targets for her fury, so Gamma Ray would call no one a true friend or enemy.

In the case of the thing with Twilight and Starlight, it's more a case of how misunderstanding and miscommunication can lead to very big problems. In the show, Starlight learns but often resorts back to the 'simpler/easier' method to fix something. In this case instead of talking/communicating with Twilight about the whole Sunburst thing she just decided it'd be easier to call the friendship over and get 'revenge'. An overreaction to be certain and likely not how things would ever happen in the show, but that's what headcanon is good for.
It feels as though such a story might start out with Equestria already as a burned-down wasteland, with even the dragons of the Dragonlands feeling overtaxed fighting fire with fire. From there, it might flash back much like an epic poem.
Maybe, ultimately, a crucial part of the Tree of Harmony's roots survives. And maybe a great deal of its power depends on Sunburst, Starlight, and Twilight repairing their old friendships. As a surprise, maybe former Lord Torch finds he himself can tap into the "Roots of Harmony" -- out of a loving desire to save his daughter Ember, along with her friends Smolder, Spike, and Garble.
Through some clever use of time travel and hidden save states, maybe most of the cosmic horror is finally purged from all timelines -- though a notable scar might still remain (somewhat analogous to liquid-paper correction). Ultimately, the parents may have to make the hard decision of killing their own daughter (or preventing her from ever existing), at some critical point in the timeline.
Maybe, ultimately, a crucial part of the Tree of Harmony's roots survives. And maybe a great deal of its power depends on Sunburst, Starlight, and Twilight repairing their old friendships.
