For me, he's looks like a husky. Malamutes are big, yeah, but also stockier (never as slender as Steele) and with rounder muzzles and smaller ears. Kirby, Ralph or Nikki would be probably malamutes. Steele doesn't look like a malamute (also, blue eyes are typical for huskies, but not usual in malamutes).

Malamutes: Nikki, Kirby, Ralph, and many backgrounds dogs in Balto I
Huskies: Steele, Jenna, Kaltag, Star, Dusty and Kodi (ok, this last one has a bit of wolf heritage).
