Suggested storyline:

No one is quite sure if the Deity of Defeat truly exists, but she is said to appear in front of those who are dying, and with bitter regret. Taking the sword from her back and running it through your heart gives you a chance to change the story. Some legends claim that this allows you to relive your last day and make more informed choices. Other legends say that you have the chance to get back up as if you were still alive for a while longer. Perhaps both situations can happen. But the legends all firmly agree that, for those who accept her cursed offering, the story is still guaranteed to end in death and defeat. She deeply loves those she helps, and her gift is created from her profound sadness at the idea that their death could be so unfair and unsatisfying; but she cannot change her nature. Some legends claim that those who accept the Deity's dark gift can sometimes hear her weeping for them, indistinctly, from somewhere far off in the distance.
