One of the breakthroughs I had in my mentorship with Pete was the realization that art actually benefits from being as self-indulgent as possible. There are a lot of aspects of this piece that are things I've wanted to do in a painting for a while, but never got around to actually doing before.
This piece is inspired by my extensive time spent trail running in the woods where I lived in Austin. When alone in that space of pushing myself physically in a natural environment that I felt connected to, it felt like the barrier between self and environment thinned considerably. I might liken it to how holding a long pole and tapping it against an object causes the pole to feel like an extension of your own senses.
Being in this almost spiritual space of being more united with natural surroundings also came at a time when I was self-actualizing during and after my transition, and feeling closer to nature also felt like being more immediate with my understanding of queerness as a spiritual expression.
Since this is an older painting now, I'll be phasing it out as the remaining prints sell out-- but you can still grab one on my site for now!
