think about it.....rabbit like ears.....fox like tail......some variations since it's a hybrid......and, it's never been officially confirmed that pikachu was based on a mouse, he is, a rodent in nature...so, yeah....why not the son of a rabbit and a fox? and yes.......i am thinking this too much. again, the pic is amazing.
I only use the watercolor/marker tool in SAI for the fur! I mix the basic colors together with watercolor, then go back and forth with the marker to create the fur pattern. It works great for emulating shorter fur, longer/fluffier fur requires a bit more brushwork but it's all basic set in SAI.
