Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), celebrated between October 31st and November 2nd, is a celebration in which Mexicans remember and honor our deceased loved ones.
Though it may sound gloomy or morbid, it's not. It's a festive and colorful holiday. Mexicans visit cemeteries, decorate the graves and spend time there - in the presence of our deceased friends and family members.
We also make elaborately decorated altars (called ofrendas) in our homes to give a good welcome to the spirits. It´s a time for the dead to return home and visit us, so give them a feast with their favorite foods and listen to their favorite music.
The altar should reflect what the dead enjoyed in the physical world, so there is plenty ideas to custom the altar. So you can make yours as small or as large and elaborate as your time and space allows.
Remember it´s the Feast of our honored loved dead.
(Hey, this one it´s my offering to my Dad & Grandpha, and also for my friends´s parents & mascots.)

He, he, he.. I think many people watch terror movies or so. The idea is very different.
It´s a spiritual matter not phisical. In this day we give them a feast on their memory giving all they like in life. A way to showing our love for them and give them a temporal welcome again in this world.

Every effort to put in there it´s so valuable, and we really wish they come to our house every year, after all that´s reason of the offering.
If you´re impressed with the offerings you should go in rural towns because you will see a very incredible way to celebrate the Holyday in the graveyards.
In this day Death it´s not a matter of fear or crying, it´s a living day!
And eventually you will find the way your dead ones will thanks you. Truly!

As we know someday we´re going to die, it´s a fact.
If there´s life of course there´s death, but in this day death comes with life to us.
As you said it´s a tradition to honor our dead people. But not a superstition.
When someone dies sometimes people eventually forget and abandoned their memory.
These days we think they are among us and we treat them if they´re living with a good welcome and a feast. No with sorrow or crying but joy.

Indeed all the living ones eat all food afterwards the Holyday!!
During the Holyday it´s not allowed take pieces from the offering, as a matter of respect (well, kids usually gets the candies before listen us...)
And those candies... well... they´re tasty!
