This is something that is probably not overly familiar to any North Americans in the audience. 5th November is Guy Fawkes day, a day "celebrated" in England and various ex-British colonies. Look it up, it is quite interesting. The Character "V" from "V for Vandetta" was based on this gentleman. But basically a day to let of lots of fireworks.

Actually it was a great movie, I completely agree. Some purists might disagree (I gather it was based on the graphic novel), but having read the graphic novel afterward, I thought it was actually not a bad movie adaptation. Not all book/comic movies are any good, but I was impressed. The Irony of the guy who played the evil leader was also quite delicious, given he played the main character (a polar opposite) in the movie 1984
And thank you, well, thanks to Kiriska, anyway

1984 is a completely different kind of movie - more drama and very, very dark compared with "V" which was a much more action oriented mainstream flick. Even if dramas are not your cup of tea, I would still strongly recommend seeing the movie, or reading the book. Then I challenge you not to spot so many of the similarities in various governments.
You will also get a much greater sense of the irony that is very strongly present in "V"

images like this are guilty of making me look at Vanguards as if they're some manner of cuddle plushies, far too adorable to be taken seriously in their evil attempts to imitate a fierce warrior society...

I admit it, I laughed... You have a delightful way with words.
Yeah, I guess with the various cartoon or light-hearted art I have of these guys I am in danger of people not taking them quite so seriously if they read the novels they feature in. But at the end of the day I think humour is important, and if I have to sacrifice credibility for them in order to get a laugh, well that's a fair trade

Naw it's okay, I was just being sarcastic to myself. XD It's also a bit more strange for someone like me, in the backwaters of Michigan, to know anything about the outside world. They don't even celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the town I live in. People further down the the state are in absolute shock at it, and I can only imagine that he southern states here in the US would call bloodshed upon us. XD
Hmm, I do hear some horror stories about ignorance of a significant % of people from certain parts of the US. However to be fair I think that many countries also have their backward thinking groups
But nice to know you're a bastion of free thought and intelligence surrounded by a sea of suck.

It's actually not a public holiday, just another normal weekday/weekend day - just where people congregate in large groups, drink too much, burn sacrificial steaks on the BBQ and then proceed to singe their eyebrows off and frighten pets.
You always wanted to see stars, didn't you? Hold still or you'll throw the sky-rocket off course.

That reminds me of a meal I had once. Fillet mignon with blue cheese butter on top, served on a bed of sugar glazed bacon. Mashed potatoes on the side and caramel sauce all over the vanilla bean cheese cake afterwards. I required a new heart, liver and nut sack afterwards. i cam after the meal and heart attack. ;)
Chocolate coated donuts are a thing of beauty, but plain (glazed?) ones can be nice as well... In NZ in some places there are street vendors who sell fresh, hot little miniature donuts in small bags... Those are goddamned delicious, all steamy hot and fresh...
McD's is a tool of the devil... when you and Jamie come visit us in NZ sometime we will introduce you to some real hot, salty chips that will make your precious French fries taste like poop in comparison.

So, is that that poor guy there somehow related to the oppressive British parliament of the day, or is just some random guy who was unfortunate enough to be within grabbing distance when this Vanguard decided he wanted to blow some shit up, and the quote is just said Vanguard trying to say some dramatic and cool-sounding shit before he smokes a brother, ala Jules Winnfield in Pulp fiction?
Either way, though, sounds like a party!
