I use them with a Level 10 Stabilizer on a Multiply-Mode Layer on a very light color 'v'

I usually multiply the lineart layer (do NOT merge them, though! It's just temporary) until it's dark enough to select outside of the lines with an 'All image' selection mode, then I invert the selection and fill/paint.
Sometimes you might want to increment the selection before inverting so the color does not go outside the lines (since having the lineart being darker might increment its size by one or two pixels).
