Timeless Bestiary: Tundra Catakarán (dragon-bird)
Catakaráns (or dragon-birds) are flightless birds, spread through many regions across the land. This one is a subspecies native to the snowy north and eastern tundras.
The tundra catakarán is an ambush predator. Their white and gray mottled plumage allows them to blend in perfectly with their icy surroundings, and despite their size, they’re very silent creatures, skilled stalkers.
The catakarán will wait for the right moment to strike, and will aim for the neck or head. Its massive beak is strong enough that a single, well aimed blow is enough to break the prey’s spine or skull, killing it in a single attack.
The catakarán is not a runner. It can sprint for short distances, but can’t run for very long, and will give up on prey it can’t catch immediately.
Catakaráns are carnivores and will hunt mammals of any size, as long as the prey is smaller than them (it should be noted that very little is larger than they are). Their sharp, toothed beak and large talons allow them to pierce quickly through thick hides. They are also known to scavenge and eat other catakaráns’ eggs and chicks.
Tundra catakaráns are loners, coming together only during the mating season. The inside of their upper beak is hollow and produces a characteristic sound when clacking against the lower half. This is their mating call, and both males and females will clack their beaks.
A female will lay two to three eggs, and the male will stay with her and the chicks until they’re ready to leave the nest, after which, each of the mating pair go their separate ways.
Catakaráns are very territorial and will defend their nest and eggs ferociously.
As a last resort weapon, a catakarán can regurgitate half-digested food at high speed at what it considers a threat.
