Description: Wailord are the biggest pokémon in the world, but they cannot swallow anything larger than a grapefruit. During the year, they travel halfway around the world to follow their main source of food: krill and small fish. To eat krill, they simply swim through the water and sieve the krill out. To hunt for fish, they use air bubbles. They make a ring of air bubbles around a shoal of fish, through which the fish cannot escape. Then, one by one, the Wailord swim through the shoal with their huge mouths wide open en gulp down hundreds of fish at a time. For six months, the females live in small groups of up to ten Wailord. The males always live alone. When it is time to mate, males sing to the females to attract their attention. The song is different for each Wailord, though there are distinct similarities between the songs of Wailord from the same region. It is though that other Wailord can hear this song from many hundreds of kilometres away, although it is only audible to humans over a relatively short distance. However, the mating of Wailords has never been observed. The other half of the year, females live alone or with their calves. For the first few months of the lives of their calves, females live in relatively shallow waters where there is no food, and thus no predators to threaten the calf. The most dangerous predator of Wailord and Wailmer are Sharpedo.
Wailord regularly dive to great depth, up to 3000 meters. They have great control over their own buoyancy. They have a huge sack of air in their body, that is normally completely filled. When they start to dive, they empty all the air out of the sack to help them sink. However, the main food source of Wailord is found pretty close to the surface. Then why do they dive to such great depths? Attempts have been made to attach camera’s to Wailord, but so far, all of these have malfunctioned or became unattached before the Wailord reached its maximum depth. Dead Wailord which are found or beached Wailord always have their stomach contents examined. So far, nothing has been found that would explain their dives. It is possible that they dive to mate, though this explains very little – why do they need to dive to mate?
Wailord have a very gentle temperament. In some places, diving excursions are organised where people get very close to Wailord. Even though they are not naturally violent, this is of course still dangerous: one accidental whack with a flipper can kill a human.
