A HALLOWEEN HAUNTING
&&&
Halloween had arrived and all of Viridian was awash with ghoulish decorations and spooky ambiance. Costumed kiddies were out on the streets in force. And in one house, an impressively sized nidorina was struggling with her own costume.
Her mom knocked on the door to her room. “Nicole, are you sure you don’t need help getting dressed?” Grumbling as she fought a near endless battle with her tights, Nicole sighed and shouted back.
“YES, mom I’m SURE I can dress myself!”
Big Momma Zuna leaned against her daughter’s bedroom door and rolled her eyes. “It’s been fifteen minutes dear.”
“Well, YOU try squeezing into a pair of tights!” Nicole shot back a bit peeved. She continued trying to get her tights over her rather large legs, continuing to grumble. “Why did he HAVE to go as Peter fricking Pan?”
Big M knocked on the door with one finger. “Language, Nicole. You know he did it because that adorable little sister of his is Tinkerbell. This is her first Halloween and he wants it to be special.”
“So I’m going as Captain Hook, yeah, that’ll REALLY make it special.” Nicole grunted as she forced a leg through a pair of tight pirate pantaloons. “I bet he just did it to annoy me.”
A call from downstairs interjected. “It’s not his fault you’re having trouble fighting into those pants!” Nicolas, Nicole’s twin brother, called up cheekily. “Maybe those islands on your butt are taking up too much room?”
“Say that to my face!” Nicole shouted, her face heating. Big M shook her head. “Play nice kids. Okay honey, your father and I are going to head out for a while. We’ll be dropping your brother off at Arora’s so the house is yours until Rene comes to pick you up. Be sure to answer the phone, take any messages, lock the door, leave out a bowl of candy for the kids--”
Nicole sighed. “I got it mom, thanks.”
“Have fun.” Her mother called as she headed downstairs. Nicole heard the front door open and close, followed shortly by the sounds of a car pulling away. She had (finally) managed to get her Captain Hook outfit on—including a plastic hook on her hand—when the doorbell rang.
“Coming!” She hurried downstairs. Grabbing the bowl of candy in one hand and practically flinging the door open with the other she looked to see—nothing. Nicole blinked. “Huh. Guess they couldn’t wait.” She closed the door. Just as she had set the candy down, the bell rang again. This time she opened the door first, thinking she would make sure the trick or treaters knew there was someone home before she took the time to get the candy.
But when she opened the door there was no one there. Again. Grumbling with annoyance as she realized what was going on, she slammed the door. “Stupid pranksters. If I hear one egg hitting a window, I’m going to go out there and go Little Momma on their tails…”
The lights flickered for a second. Nicole looked up. “Great. Might as well check the circuit breaker before Rene shows up…” Nicole headed to the basement, ignoring the doorbell ringing again. Just as she reached the bottom of the basement steps the lights in the house went out. All of them.
“…Crap.” Nicole started making her way across the basement where she and her family trained when her foot sudden hit something very hard. “Owww! Stupid Nicolas! Why can’t he ever leave his stupid barbells where they belong?!” She swore, hopping on one foot.
After a few minutes cursing and then a few minutes checking the circuit breaker (which didn’t help, leading to a few MORE minutes of cursing), Nicole headed back upstairs in the dark. She looked at her celphone, waiting for Rene to call. “He should’ve been here by now…” RAPTAPTAP! Nicole gave a sudden start as…something…tapped on the window pane in the living room. She fumbled around in the dark for a flashlight and then quickly turned it on. She shone it on the window…but there was nothing there.
“Jeez, what next?” Nicole jumped when the lights suddenly all came back on. She stumbled and knocked the candy bowl off the table where she had left it. Dropping to one knee, Nicole managed to avoid injuring herself…but winced when the bowl landed on her head. She felt something ooze down her neck. Wiping it with one hand she found that one particularly juicy bit of candy had burst all over her head. “I HAD to ask…at least the power’s on.”
Feeling a vibration in her pocket, Nicole took out her cell to see a text message had been left by Rene. “Running a little late. Will C U in a little bit. Luv you island tail –Rene.”
Nicole sighed. “Great. Might as well get this crud off me while I’m waiting.” Nicole trudged up the stairs and went into the bathroom. She started setting a bath while she stripped off her Captain Hook outfit, annoyed that she’d just have to struggle back into it again. When the tub was near-full, Nicole stepped in. She sighed, enjoying the feel of the hot water. Nicole shut her eyes, letting her body untense after all the weirdness that’d been going on that night…
With a reluctant sigh, Nicole opened her eyes and climbed out of the tub. She dried herself off and started getting dressed, pulling on her underwear and was just working her shirt over her head when she heard the sound of the front door opening and closing. “Hey mom? Dad? You guys home early?” She finished pulling on her shirt. There was a pause. “Rene? Is that you?” No answer. “Dammit, this isn’t funny!” She fumed as she flung open the bathroom door and looked downstairs.
Just as she reached the downstairs the lights went out again. “Oh SON of a—” Then there was a bright flash and Nicole had to throw her hands over her eyes. When she could see again she pulled her hands back to see a Cheshire-like eyes and smiling mouth hovering in the middle of nothing. And then…it started to sing:
When the crypt goes creak,
And the tombstones quake.
Spooks come out for a swinging wake.
Happy haunts materialize,
And begin to vocalize.
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize.
A ghostly purple face materialized around the eyes and mouth. Nicole’s mouth dropped as she started to back away…she turned around—just in time to see the same ghostly face grinning at her!
Now don't close your eyes,
And don't try to hide.
Or a silly spook may sit by your side.
Shrouded in a daft disguise,
They pretend to terrorize.
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize.
“Get out!” Nicole hollered as she tried to bat the ghostly visage away. Then she turned and tried to head back upstairs. Her footsteps thundered on the stairs…but sitting on the railing, seemingly sliding upwards was that darn spirit!
As the moon climbs high o'er the dead oak tree,
Spooks arrive for the midnight spree.
Creepy creeps with eerie eyes,
Start to shriek and harmonize.
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize.
Nicole then turned on her heel and ran back down the stairs again. The ghost—a mismagius—sat on the bottom of the steps and finished her song.
When you hear the knell of a requiem bell,
Weird glows gleam where spirits dwell.
Restless bones etherialize,
Rise as spooks of every size.
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize.
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialiiiiiize!
Flinging the door open so hard that it slammed against the side of the house, Nicole ran out and immediately slammed the door shut again. She leaned against the door panting.
“Um…honey?” Nicole turned around and still with her adrenaline pumped made a fist and threw it—only to stop half an inch from her boyfriend’s face. Rene gulped. “Um…sorry I’m late?”
Nicole let her fist drop, panting. Standing in front of her was Rene, his mother Vera who was holding little baby Candace, Rene’s cousin Faith, her boyfriend Pike, as well as Penny, Josh, Sarah, Ness—Nicole vaguely remembered Rene saying something about going to Faith’s first for a Sumisu-style Halloween with them—and also with Rene’s good friends Karen Shiitake the medicham he went trick-or-treating with last year, a grumpy looking Weaver Hipnough, Mitzi Fiera, and Floritt Baez the smeargle.
Rene scratched the back of his head, looking darn cute in his Peter Pan outfit. “Everything okay?”
“Just…peachy…” Nicole panted, not willing to admit to ever being afraid. “Why?”
“Weeeeell….” Rene fiddled with one of his tails as he looked at his girlfriend. “You—don’t seem ready to go trick or treating with us.”
“Oh…why not?” The nidorina asked.
“Well…you’re not dressed.” Rene said simply. Nicole looked down and immediately let out a loud squawk and blushed heavily. She was still only wearing her underwear and a shirt! She quickly tried tugging the front of the shirt down and hunching over, her face beet-red. “I think youstill look cute though.” Rene said innocently. Nicole glowered.
From out of the chimney of the Zuna house, the haunting mismagius Nessarose Halliwell floated out of the top, giggling. What was a good Halloween without a good prank? She flew away on her broom, her shadow silhouetted against the full moon.
Happy Halloween one and all!

The song? It's "Grim Grinning Ghosts" actually from Disney's Haunted Mansion. Here's one version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-av7xd2Llk
Yes, we like Nessa, let just hope Nicole will never find out about her hiding in the chimney. Because then she might discover how some girls show their affection by punding you straight into the ground.
I was surprised Weaver didn't throw any remark upon seeing Zuna, like "Is it me, Rene, or your pants-losing thing is contagious?"
Great story
