Just finished this one like 10 minutes ago. It's a synthetic alexandrite. This thing was a PAIN to cut. Amethyst is quartz, so it has a 7 on the Moh's hardness scale. Alexandrite is also known as chrysoberyl and has a Moh's hardness of 8.5. Not quite as hard as ruby/sapphire (9) or diamond (10) but still harder than emerald (8) or most other gems. It took me like 15 hours to get this thing finished. Thankfully, it came out beautifully, so it was worth the immense effort.
Material: Synthetic alexandrite
Cut: Sirius old mine cut
Weight: 5.8ct
Size: 10mm
Value: ≈$300

I have a faceting machine. 10mm is actually quite large. If you look at the gems commonly seen in jewelry, it's rarely larger than a few mm in diameter. You can find things bigger than 10mm though, but outside of pendants, gems that large are usually seen as gaudy, flashy, obnoxious, and "costume jewelry."
i never heard of faceting machines before, with absolutely no experience in that they do not look easy to handle for me :o
and now that you mention it, yes indeed, jewelry stores tend to put only small gems on rings and such, i guess i am much more used to video game jewelry where things are always super big ! :p
