Cyndaquil is a mouse, but both Quilava and Typhlosion are the Volcano Pokemon (along with Entei). So if Typhlosion is based on the Honey Badger, the argument could be made Quilava is just a smaller badger.

I've read once that they most closely resemble stoats.

I think cyndaquil is based on some sort of anteater judging by the snout shape, and having quils (though that are retractable and made of fire) would suggest the design is somewhat based on an echidna. I agree with your breakdown of the other two, but I still think the existence of their fiery quils might suggest a combination of badger and echidna (or some other spined creature like a hedgehog or porcupine)
