¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯Whoo another story comic, finally! Some details about this one, as usuallll:
The first rule that's "programmed" into all of the prototypes is to survive at all costs, but the second rule is to protect their caretakers to the best of their ability, and if they're treated well they can get very attached to their caretakers and protecting them is very rewarding to the prototype. When they're young (Julian would only be a few months old) they understand this as fighting against something, like protecting their caretakers from wild animals or attackers, but don't really understand the concept of illness, since they never have to worry about it. Usually they'd learn about it through seeing other people sick or more treatable things their caretakers caught, unfortunately one of the people Julian was attached to caught something bad before he understood what was happening. He knew he was making an effort to help, so he'd feel like he was fighting it, but wouldn't understand when it didn't work and would feel like he had failed a pretty strong urge to protect them. Normally they can ignore the second rule if it would put themselves in danger, but with this he'd feel like there was no danger to himself, so it would be possible for him to protect them and it'd confuse him when he wasn't able to because of something out of his control.
And the engines activate if it detects adrenaline, there's any muscle strain, or there's a perceived need for more strength, and with him tensing up and being so angry at himself it would think something bad was happening and would prepare to be used.
Also cute things!
And here's the PNG version!

Hm....natural momma type, I'm guessing that Iolite wouldn't be jealous in the event that Kris DID have a kid one day...seems like that wouldn't be beneficial to 'em, even if it is natural human behavior.
And that brings up ANOTHER sad comic you could do where one of the prototypes gets supplanted in a family after the birth of a child and I don't need that right now.

Don't worry, she wouldn't be jealous at all, even if Kris had a kid while she was young! Taking care of kids would make them more useful to the family, and more likely to be kept and given resources so that she could continue to do so, so her instincts would tell her to learn how to take care of 'em too!
And the families usually find them, so if they were taking in the prototype after having a kid it'd probably be from them being in "take care of kids" mode and finding a lost child that didn't know where they were and where they're from would make them wanna help. In which case it's basically perfect for the prototype! Being taken in by people that probably care and having an opportunity to be useful right away by helping to take care of the baby, making them even more important, it's everything they'd want!

I was thinking more the other side, where a prototype was brought in by people who WANTED to have children but had thus far been unable to; and then, after, a baby shows up and they start to ignore the prototype (even though, yeah, they'd want nothing more than to help take care of the kid which I hear is REALLY HARD WORK). I feel like that's a story I've heard before, but basically I'm imagining that it would be EXTRA traumatizing for a prototype to be rejected after the initial bonding.
That level of emotional connection plus an even slightly fickle human recipient could be bad, is all I'm saying. Which is actually all humans...have we seen Kris get mad at Iolite yet? Like proper mad, for whatever reason? May have if Lemmywinks hadn't escaped his well-deserved fate...that villain..

IT IS HARD, I've helped take care of lots of babbies, and would probably be even harder in medieval times!
Hmmmm, getting positive reinforcement and attention from the people they're attached to is pretty rewarding for them, so getting lots of attention and then suddenly getting less would bother them a little. Though it'd probably just make them wanna work harder, and if they were getting the same amount of resources from the family or even more since they were doing more work, it'd still not bother them enough for them to really take it into account. They'd probably end up just getting more attached to whoever gave them more attention, so they could continue to be socially stimulated, as long as it didn't disrupt their share of the resources. Early on in their life though if they had to work harder and got less attention AND food, they'd probably consider leaving to look for someone else that'd be more profitable for them.
And luckily with Kris' attitude and the way she lives there isn't a huge chance of her getting that angry at her. Though after the first few months Kris and the family would definitely be suitable caretakers in Iolite's eyes (which is actually probably a little skewed by how easy it is for people to get food in modern times, she might have assumed Kris was doing very well with how much she was able to feed her), and she could tolerate Kris getting super angry with her and would want to make up for it somehow to keep their relationship stable. THOUGH, if she had ended Lemmywink's reign of terror on that first day and Kris was furious at her, then Iolite (still in survival mode) would have got out of there to start the prototype's normal routine of surviving on the streets and looking out for people that seem the friendliest or most giving

Ahhh, I see. For some reason I had it in my head that a prototype bond was a sort of one-and-done for-life deal, rather than something where if they weren't getting what they needed that they'd move on. That flexibility leads to a LOT less tragedy dealing with the human condition...
Now my head's moved on to a prototype in the hands of a crime syndicate, some old-fashioned cartoon criminal realizing "nya, see, this kid is wicked strong and wants to do whatever I say. I can use this to my advantage, see." Though I suppose the luck there is that such people would be less likely to provide the initial charity to win a prototype's loyalty...though THAT thought makes me wonder, would a prototype hurt other humans at the command of their primary caretaker?
Freakin' Lemmywinks though.

Fortunately (or unfortunately?) they're made to survive, so the ability to be flexible and find the best living situation is pretty important!
YA SEEE, haha yeah they'd have to not only seem friendly and giving when the prototype was looking for someone to approach, they'd also have to feel the same way when they first interacted with 'em, and then treat them well for a little while to earn their trust. They're extremely observant in the first year of their life and would notice a lot of unfavorable things, so luckily the odds of some really bad person picking one up and training 'em to do criminal things is really low. But if someone were to take them in and treat them well and then train them to be something like a thief or pickpocket, then they'd be very good at it with their almost superhuman reaction time and coordination, and you'd never be able to tell if they were lying because they have no natural tells.
And then THAT leads to them being comfortable with doing worse things for someone that takes care of them. Another of their "rules" is to not stick out too much from the crowd early on when they don't know many social things, so unnecessary aggression towards humans and animals is something they'll avoid and asking them to do something like that while they're young would just make them think you aren't gonna be a very good parent. Anyone that would wanna use 'em for that wouldn't be able to threaten 'em into doing it either, since they don't feel fear or pain really, and they have no connections so there'd be no reason for them to do anything they didn't want to, and the person would probably eventually die by the prototype killing them to escape! But just like the thieving part they can be conditioned to be okay with it if the caretaker puts a lot of resources into them and is trusted, so some ended up being criminals to help their caretakers, and some of them ended up being soldiers, and one was a high ranking one, and one a pirate, and some that fought against pirates, and one that took sacrifices and ate people hearts because Aztecs thought they were a god and they didn't have a reason to not believe it.
So yeh, what they're willing to do basically just depends on how well their caretaker take care of 'em and what morals and principals they end up teaching them! Like hamsters aren't for eating, for example

That all makes good sense! So Iolite would probably step in if Kris got jumped in an alley on the way home from a play, instead of becoming Batman (#LemmywinksIsIolitesJoker), but if Kris had a sudden personality swap and started telling her to go out and murder would probably not work out. A "corrupt" prototype is all but impossible by the combination of survival instincts and set criteria for what makes a good caregiver that they are seeking out, and would basically require informed intent from start to finish. Which nobody on Earth would be capable of.
So much for my mental image of a Prototype coming home and saying, all excited, "Don Icepick, I broke SO many kneecaps today!" And getting the response "Good work, kid, here's an entire Christmas goose for your troubles. Nya." Though it sounds like Aztec God Prototype had a heck of a life.
Side note, it occurred to me this morning that prototypes would NOT make good medieval food testers, even though they'd probably love the job. Might make great chefs, though, assuming they could manage the self control..

She would most definitely jump in and beat peeps up instead of becoming Batman, and Kris turning evil after like a year or so would probably more make her think something was wrong with Kris than make her wanna do the evil things she's asking about, so luckily no corruption there either! And hah, if someone like that did end up adopting one though and was a great parent to 'em, they would totally come to them excited to have done what they asked, even if it was terrible! They'd still love the encouragement and being rewarded for making them happy
Hah! Actually they'd make great food tasters, but terrible cooks! They have a sense of taste but have no preference for taste and just eat whatever gives them the stuff they need, so they wouldn't know what was "good" unless they spent a while learning what people liked and what specific tastes are associated with what feelings. They'd basically eat dirt if it had enough to sustain them and would be just as enthusiastic about it as they would be about eating cake. On the other hand though their tongues are pretty sensitive to things that may have been toxic to earlier generations (all the later generation's bodies just neutralize poisons and venom, but they still have a sense for it and try to avoid those things), so if they felt they didn't wanna eat something, then it's probably not good for humans!

Hm...that makes sense, too! I was thinking more along the lines of, a food taster who didn't die upon consuming poison might not give the notice they needed, but built in recognition of Bad Stuff would actually be suitable. And frankly after all the stuff we've seen Iolite eat, I shouldn't be surprised that taste isn't really a factor.
Though all of this is making it sound more like there isn't any real emotional connection there at all for Iolite. So how much of it is smoke and mirrors against cold hard almost sociopathic processing? Because we see in this comic literally right here, a prototype being upset, but at the same time they'll break bonds in search of a better caregiver. We know Iolite dislikes Lemmywinks, but does she have other preferences? Do they know right from wrong, or is it really just cold observation that "wrong" gets you ejected from society and that's bad for prototypes?
And the world's not ready for Batolite anyway. Iobat?

Well before they find someone to take care of 'em they live in the wild or out on the streets and eat random plants and bugs and instinctively eat small animals belly first so they can make sure to get their livers (it has a high concentration of a lot of things they need), so a sense of taste probably isn't toooo necessary
And it's a bit of both machine-like thought and human-like thought! The back end where all the decision making is done is just cold logic, and that's where all the "rules" happen, basically just feelings attached to certain actions, and the strength of the feelings are modified during their time with their caretakers. The front end would be what the prototypes themselves think and feel, and it's mostly what governs their actions when they're doing social things. The logic brain is completely dominant when they're born and drives them to do specific things in a mechanical way, so in the wild they'll be pretty animal-like and uncaring of most things, and wont show many emotions until they start to socialize with humans. It's also what drives them to find someone to stay with, and each one would have pretty much the same preferences when they're born, being just clones of each other with different faces and skin tones. Once they do find someone to take care of them though their social brain will take over and start soaking up every detail it can about how to act and what their caretaker might be thinking, and it'll start to modify some of the low priority rules in their logic brain to make their decisions sort of based on things their caretakers might like them to do.
Like for example, a prototype that's known someone for a week and considers them a good option and wants to stay with them, and then a cougar attacks 'em! The later generation prototypes could easily overpower it and were built to do so, but they run because their feeling of "find a caretaker" is still stronger than "protect your caretaker", the prototype feels rewarded for surviving and they forget about the person because they may not be an option anymore and they get set back to wild mode.
Then if the same prototype were to have known the person for even just a few months, they'd have a stronger feeling of protection and would have a much deeper understanding of their own physical abilities from having to do different tasks and actually exploring more of themselves. If they felt they could take it they'd just jump right in and wrestle the thing till it ran or they beat it, or if they didn't think it was worth it they'd take charge and plan an escape for their caretaker with their protection. In this case their logic brain still completely takes over and "social" emotions like fear and even their feelings towards the person are completely hidden so they can logically plan things, but now their set of rules have been changed to incorporate the people they're with, and their "survive to be able to find a human" has turned into "survive and protect your human so that they may continue to take care of you". Once they're both safe the prototype might tell them how scared they were and would want to be comforted, but it's their social brain kicking back in and wanting them to appear normal and bond.
It all comes from something cold and logical, but that part of them has no connection to who they feel they are, if that makes sense. So to the prototypes their feeling of connection and love or loss for the people they're close to is very real, and even if missing a caretaker or loved one that has passed just meant their logic brain was failing to enact rules that were tailored around that person, the prototype still feels and expresses that as emotional pain and confusion until their social brain knows how to deal with it. Unless they get attacked by another cougar or hamsters that are part of an uprising while they're grieving, then that's all put on hold till they beat 'em.
Their rules would eventually go back to their "default" settings if they were alone again, or start to adapt to whoever they were left with, but they would always remember them, and thinking about the good memories would still make them happy
Jeez I have too much fun thinkin about details
