Why not both? The Rickenbacker 12 strings have this ingenious tuner arrangement. The peg/slot combination results in six tuning knobs poking out the side of the headstock, while the other six are at a 90 degree angle poking out the back.

Rickenbacker guards their designs very vigilantly. No other guitar makers can directly copy them. They even have exclusive use of the "reverse" 12-string configuration.
George Harrison had the second 12-string Rickenbacker ever made ( the one in "A Hard Day's Night" ), and he once said that the great thing about this tuner key arrangement was that even when he was drunk he still knew which string he was tuning. I always loved that!
