The fox sat in the shelter of a ledge of ice, protected from the snow laden winds that ripped across the uniform surface of the snowlands. In the Winter months darkness was all that one might see for days, and he carried with him a lantern lighted at all times. But with each passing day the fox watched as his oil steadily dwindled. The once thriving light flickered, threatening to extinguish at any moment. The darkness swelled and ebbed, as though pushing to get at the fox. It was only a matter of time before the darkness would win, and he knew that for the first time in this journey the fox would draw his blade and rely on the keenness of his ears and the strength of his will.
