Within several short minutes, the group were traversing passages closer to the surface- the walls featured lit torches, and there were constant, though muffled sounds of footsteps from above. The tunnels had started getting wider, with higher ceilings, allowing the group to break single file while passing through the winding maze.
"I can hear... lots of people, above us", Scale whispered.
"Yes, well, we're under the market district," Rinnia said, "It's always busy during the morning hours. Anyway, we'll be up top soon. My house is just a stone's throw from one of the tunnel access gates- We can hold up there until we're ready to carry out Kira's rescue... Oh, by the way, Goldie?"
"Hm?" Gaaren grunted, softly enough that the vixen couldn't tell if he were bothered by the nickname.
"We'll have to make sure nobody recognizes you when we're up top... We don't want any problems, huh?" Rin said.
"I doubt anyone would. Unless they were Drakespire", he retorted.
"Well, we can't rule that out, y'know? There's plenty of your kind here. Plus, the temple where they've got Kira locked up has Drakespire warriors and halfbreeds working security...", Rin said, moving a little closer to Gaaren, "... You know, I could perform a little, itty bitty spell to change the color of those lovely scales of yours- temporarily, of course- You're perfect as you are. How does pink sound?", she said, smiling.
"Not happening."
"Um, Rin", Scale spoke up, "Usually, when we're doing... This kind of stuff, if we don't want to be noticed, I just-"
"Scale, sshh". Lyle's ears twitched, suddenly detecting more steps- not from above, but from some distance ahead.
"We've got company," he smiled, bringing the group to a halt. "Only two... Gaar, do you...?"
"Yeah. Little dragon..." Gaaren said, looking to Scale, "Here come the snacks."
Snacks.
Rinnia looked to the warrior dragon, with a confused expression. "What's this oversized lizard talking about?", she mumbled to herself.
The vixen and two dragons began hearing the pairs of footsteps, as Lyle had several seconds prior, in addition to the subtle rustling sound of chain mail armor. Sure enough, two creatures appeared from a bend in the tunnel- and awkwardly paused upon noticing the group, glancing at each other before twitchingly grabbing for the spears holstered on their backs. Both were lizards, standing rather short, with their heads barely reaching the height of Rin's shoulders, and forest-green in color, though the orange light from the wall torches made their scales appear teal. They were lightly armored, each wearing an identical set of armor consisting of a steel breastplate with spiked pauldrons, worn over a chain coat that reached almost to their knees, and bulky, brass-toned wrist and shin plates. Both also wore smooth, green cloaks.
One of the lizard guards hopped forward with a snarl, and aimed his spear at Lyle, who stood nearest him. "Who goes there?! This tunnels are off-limits!", he barked, showing little if any fear. His partner quickly stepped out beside him, focusing on Rinnia.
"Wait... this one's wearing a temple uniform...", he said, lowering the blade of his own spear cautiously. "And he's one of drakespire's- a big one, too. Maybe..."
The first guard kept his weapon pointed at the nightwolf, and turned his head to his fellow lizard. "No! The warden would have told us about any other operations authorized within the walls. We've heard nothing...", he whispered.
Rin noticed Scale adjust his grip on his staff, and look up to Gaaren- she ignored the dragons, and, after brushing a few loose strands of hair on her fringe back into place, she gently nudged Lyle aside, approaching the two guards without a hint of hostility.
Time to spin a lie.
"At ease, you two. We're down here on Warden Zokor's orders," the vixen said, casually. "We're searching for... a fugitive. He broke out of the temple dungeon this morning, and we've tracked him to this section of the wall. I'm... actually surprised to see the two of you down here", Rin folded her arms, and continued. "The warden was supposed to send out an order to suspend tunnel patrols, so we wouldn't be risking any guards... This one's a real psycho, see? Eats his victims when he's done with them. The message didn't reach you in time, I guess" Rinnia sighed, feigning concern.
The lizard with his spear raised relaxed his grip on the weapon, and lowered it away from Rinnia, toward the ground. He turned to his partner. "You hear that?!", he said, his voice showing a pinch of anxiety, "There's a lunatic lurking around down here!"
The second guard seemed equally convinced. "Aye... Then we best not stick around. These temple folks can handle things just fine I'll bet, no need for us to..." he trailed off, looking past Rinnia, his pupils thinning. "That's...You! Drop that thing, now!! Don't you know Vel-Jerro is a staff free zo-"
Rin perceived a subtle pulse of magic from somewhere behind her- she looked over her shoulder just in time to see Scale's staff dim. Her attention snapped back to the two guards when her ears caught the rough clanking of several objects hitting the ground. The two guards appeared to be gone- though their armor, cloaks, and weapons remained behind, scattered on the floor in the spots their owners had been standing. The vixen's face briefly wore a look of confusion before she glanced back to Scale in surprise, not forgetting what she had heard about the dragon and his magic staff- although, she was shocked at the apparent efficiency of the artefact. What kind of power could the unassuming lizard really possess?
Gaaren walked past Rinnia, and the nearest bundle of cloth and armor, to the spot where the second guard had been standing. The warrior dragon crouched down and began to casually root through the clutter, nudging the armored plate over and lifting up a section of the green fabric. Rin watched attentively as he revealed the tiny and struggling form of a little green lizard, still fidgeting in the folds of the cloak he'd been wearing moments ago, and observed the little creature for a brief moment before Gaaren's massive hand surrounded him.
The vixen's eyes were then drawn to the pile in front of her, by a small shape moving under part of the crumpled cloak. She hesitated for just a second before kneeling down and quickly lifting the garment. And, though she saw exactly what she was expecting, Rinnia was no less surprised to find another lizard- the very same one she had just been talking to, now nude and reduced to small fraction of the height he had just stood at moments ago.
"Oh...", Rin whispered, as the confused little creature met her gaze with his own eyes, and let out a panicked yelp- though, to the vixen, it was more like a squeak. He was just a tiny lizard, after all.
The miniturized guard instinctively skittered back, and quickly bumped into a comparatively massive steel object that had formerly been a section of his armor- but before he could attempt to skirt around it, Rinnia's paw was already drawing close. The lizard was terrified- His heart was racing as were his lungs, which were expanding and contracting more rapidly than they ever had in his life. Though, as he stood with his back pressed against the wall of metal blocking his escape, his mind started to form thoughts amid the chaos of the situation. He began to properly take in the immense scale of the vixen, his breath catching as he did so. Her eyes, which he couldn't bring himself to break away from once he met their gaze, both terrified and awed him- As big as she was, the look in her stunning blue eyes seemed totally innocent, but full of curiosity. Certainly not the look of one who would wish to harm him. And so, when her hand made contact with his tiny form, the lizard did not try to run or scramble away- Which would have been a useless endeavor anyway. Instead, he merely gasped, his whole body tensing as the vixen's hand softly scooped him up.
With the shrunken guard in hand, Rinnia rose and inspected her catch, poking the lizard with her fingertip as he sat shivering in her open palm. He jolted at the initial touch, but became nearly still besides the constant shivers when Rin's initial poke gave way to gentle stroking motions, beginning on his head and sliding down his back to the base of his tail, then lifting off to move back to his head and so on. The guard seemed to relax, just a tiny bit, from Rinnia's gentle touch. He coughed a little from the sudden exertion his lungs had experienced, and a small wisp of fire left his maw.
"That's... really something", she said, with a slight frown.
The vixen continued to stroke the lizard as she observed him for a few moments, until a sound grabbed her attention.
