"SpongeBob SquarePants" has been a favorite cartoon of mine since I was 12. I'll never forget how back in 1999 when I saw this weird teaser on Nickelodeon for a new show about a sponge who lives in a pineapple house, cooking burgers in the ocean. Curious, if not confused, but I'm glad to have watched that first episode and kept doing so to this day.
Y'know what's really fascinating about the show's creator, Stephen Hillenburg? Aside from his early work on another 90s childhood favorite, "Rocko's Modern Life," before studying animation, he was a marine biology teacher.
I was shocked when first learning about Mr. Hillenburg's ALS diagnosis last year, but even more so at his passing. It's amazing how an idea as bizarrely unique as "SpongeBob" grew into something so big and beloved - and for that, we'll always be grateful for such a charming cartoon with outrageous characters, zany animation, and surreal humor.
Thank you, Stephen, for teaching us what FUN is, letting us know we're all Goofy Goobers, the importance of Karate, not telling us the Krabby Patty Secret Formula, and getting us ready to sing about who lives in a pineapple under the sea. Bon voyage, Ocean Man.
