Astro Boy because I got Helen McCarthey's book on Tezuka's work the other day and it's SO GOOD and he is so cute.
everyone go out and buy it. not only is the book amazingly put together but she is a tiny old english lady who says the best cusses and totally knows her stuff.

yup, it's in the book. Tezuka lived next to this awesome lady who ran a theater group, and greatly admired her. many of his characters reflect the blending of feminine and masculine traits he learned from her including Astro who is actually also based off of the robot in Metropolis who was androgynous. androgyny is a really big thing in a lot of his works (and boy does he have so many works I didn't know about!) it seems he thought that the perfect balance of power could only be attained by using masculine strength with feminine emotions and understanding.
check out that book!
check out that book!
yeah I know. I mean the whole point is that horrible things happen to Astro but he shows us that just because people are dicks to you doesn't mean that gives you the right to be a dick to the rest of the world. Having him just come from a cuddly loving home right off instead of learning that people can be kind the hard way kind of defeats the point.
idk.
idk.
I recently saw that CG Astro Boy movie and I have to say it's not bad at all. It could have been better in some spots, but overall it was a rather enjoyable movie. I took my 6-year old step-cousin, or shall I say step-brother's son (not sure which) to go see it, and he thoroughly enjoyed it. I did too actually.
In this alternate retelling of the Astro Boy origin (which is nothing new since there have been various versions throughout the years, even ones Tezuka worked on), we got many of Tezuka's star system here in the background. Prof. Ochanomizu as Dr. Elefun, Dr. Tenma as himself, Nathan Lane as HamEgg, Shunsaku Ban as Mr. Moustachio, and while he only has one line of dialogue in the movie, Osamu Tezuka's in there as well. Granted he's not voiced by Tezuka, seeing as how he died in '89, but the self-insert caricature of himself that he often drew into the comics is there to keep the Tezuka feel. Plus, all the other star-system characters still retain their original roles from the original Astro Boy, more or less. Dr. Tenma is still the grieving father over the loss of his son, Dr. Elefun is still a top scientist with the ministry, Mr. Moustachio is the teacher at school, and HamEgg is the ringmaster of the "Robot Games" (instead of Robot Circus as in the original).
Overall, it's an enjoyable movie. It has a younger audience in mind, but it still has some good elements to it.
Any fans of Tezuka or Astro Boy will most likely enjoy this movie.
