The trunk is a robot, with a low level of artificial intelligence. The electronics and mechanisms to move the piston feet are in the bottom panel. It can lock and unlock itself, has a homing function, and can send a charge of electricity over its metal banding to deter thieves.
When Fred was a cub, he foiled a kidnapping attempt by hiding inside the trunk. It stuck itself to the floor with the suction-cup function of the starfish-like feet and pulsed electric shocks at its assailants until they gave up.
