So as promised, as I rested a little. Carrack is used as a medical intervention unit, pair with his Rider and Owner, Cassandra Rutherford who is a Field medic.
Fact to know: Carrack is a catalyst. A living being attracting natural and magical energy inside it's body. And despite the fact that windea can't actualy use any for of magic (at least in this universe) the military use some device like the cilinder Carrack has on his rump. It's a device made to pump said energy and allowing the medic to use it for his job.
Sadly said device can causes some harm to the catalyst. The light emanation, only them can see this particular spectrum, which can cause deep injuries to their retina. This is why they are wearing mask like shown on the picture. And the mounts have to be used to them and follows a long and exhausting training to actualy be able to move despite the loss of the sight.
Also, as shown on the picture, the saddlebag is filled with medical furniture and the harness on the chest part of the harness are made to carry an injuried soldier if its condition is too bad (like my grammar.)

I presume it's infeasible to build otherwise-transparent goggles that block the glow, since if they were practical that would allow Carrack to see without injury, and thus sidestep the whole "training to move while hooded" thing as well as probably a bunch of problems that result from having a blind mount.
hush you =p don't break my stuff. You can get used to be blind, I experienced myself. And in this lore, the rider of such mount are paired after several selection, including the mounts "bounding" to it. They trains for month if not years before being put in combat. Even if it's mostly impossible, I want to believe that a high level of trust and knowledge about your partner would allow you to move accordingly. After all, a mount follows the reins, right?
