I imagine with Sulley being so large his feet would naturally be hanging over the end of the bed and accidentally one day Mike brushed against them, maybe the toes twitching and Sulley giving a bit of a giggle but staying fast asleep. So if Mike learnt that Sulley is a deep sleeper and he's quite ticklish then it's probably just too tempting to pass up the opportunity to have a little fun, especially when the big blue furry monster is just so cuddly.
