Not so Perfect 2
“How do I look?” Chaos beamed as he paraded down the stairs, tail swaying happily behind him with every step he took. He was dressed in his best with a tiny suit adoring his small frame, and he smiled a great shiny pearly white smile as he entered the living room, where most of the family was seated. Pandora and Joy burst into giggles and quickly jumped up to fawn over him, fixing his hair and straightening his buttons.
“DAWWwwww, you look adorable!” Pandora squealed, squeezing him tightly, before Chaos pushed her off with a short snarl.
“I do not! Mom! How do I look?!” Chaos whimpered, turning towards the other female, who glanced at Pandora, then back towards her son.
“…You look…erm…Amazing sweetie…” She explained. Chaos grinned sharply, and Joy shot Pandora a sharp grin.
“Amazingly adorable.” She snapped, and the two burst into giggles. Chaos blushed sharply and turned towards Calamity, who was simply holding up a sign that read [ADORABLE] on it in capital letters. He rolled his eyes and turned away towards Joshua, who was lazing in his Lazy-boy chair.
“Alright…Dad? You’re my last hope…how do I look.” Begged the puppy. The elder coyote looked at his snickering, giggling family, and finally at his pleading son before he shook his head.
“You look like a handsome coyote off on his first dance. You’ll knock ‘em dead with those moves I taught you. By the way, you’re gonna need this.” Joshua explained, kneeling down from his chair to tie a bright red bow tie around Chaos’ neck. The family ‘awwwed’ and Chaos’ face light up in a bright, cheerful smile.
“Thanks dad! You’re the best! Alright, I gotta go! I’ll see you guys later! Pandora, will you drive me?” Squeaked the boy.
“Remember Chaos- Home by eleven!” Joy shouted as Chaos and Pandora padded off towards the garage. Joshua sat back in his chair and shook his head quietly.
“Seriously. He was freakin’ adorable.” He announced. The family burst into peels of laughter.
At the school, Chaos silently snuck into through the halls towards the ballroom. He was doing his best to avoid Roderick’s angry vengeance and hoped he could find Rhubella, catch a few quick dances and leave before the night became savage. To his good fortune, he didn’t run into the angry male rat at all, and arrived at the ballroom to an astonishing sight. Rhubella was standing there, waiting for him, dressed in a shimmering crimson gown that outlined her gorgeous shape. He gulped, reaching up to pull out his collar and a sharp burst of steam erupted from his neck.
“Chaos Coyote. You ACTUALLY showed up. And you look…well…actually you look adorable.” She beamed. Chaos groaned quietly and strode up to her, crossing his arms.
“And you look incredible…I mean wow…you really look amazing, Ruby.” He beamed brightly. The rat girl blushed, her tail curling around her side shyly and she dipped her head.
“Well…erm…t, thank you. I admit I never expected to end up at a dance with you, but you really do look…well passable, to say the least. Now we gotta find Roderick. This’ll drive him crazy!” The girl hissed wickedly. Chaos’ heart sank but he refused to give in. Not yet- and he certainly didn’t want to find Roderick. No, he had a better idea.
“Do you dance?” He asked quietly, holding out an open palm for the rodent girl. She stared at him as if he’d lost his mind, and then snickered.
“Dance? With YOU? You must have lost your mind Chaos.” Rhubella snarled and Chaos gave her a sharp grin, shaking his head with a shrug.
“Well it’s ok if you don’t know how to dance-“ He baited. She took it-hook line and sinker.
“OF COURSE I KNOW HOW TO DANCE!” She growled. Chaos snatched her wrist and yanked her quickly towards the dance floor.
“Well ok then! Nothin’ to worry about!” He giggled. Rhubella had been tricked and she knew it. She squirmed, trying to pull away from Chaos’ grasp as the coyote lead her towards the dance floor. He snapped his fingers and the music that was playing stopped and a spotlight hit the two of them. Her worst nightmare was slowly coming true. This was HORRIBLE. This miserable goofball of a klutz had managed to get her onto the dance floor, the entire school was watching them, and there was a spotlight on them. Could this possibly get any worse?! Tango music began to play, and Rhubella groaned. A tango? A complex dance that was supposed to be done by that geek of a coyote?! Just shoot her now. To her surprised, Chaos gripped her hand and twirled her around with a precise finesse that left her befuddled. The boy…could…dance?
Suddenly, the two of them were moving as one, a mixed chaotic tango of weaves and bobs, twists and fluid, liquid turns that left the two dizzied in the dance they dived into. Swirling about the bright lights and sweet tinted smells of the school’s lavish ballroom, Rhubella actually found herself genuinely smiling. This. Was. Fun. She was actually having fun! Somewhere, along in the midst of the firth twirl of her glittering, fluttering dress, she'd long stopped caring what the other snobs thought of her. Stopped labeling herself and stopped counting the moments until the dance was done. Somewhere, she'd picked up a steady rhythmic motion, that flowed like a sweet mathematical equation. A number of flooded steps and confusing foot falls that ranked high on her list of things she'd never thought she'd do. She even stopped gazing over at Roderick, having spotted him in the crowd, no longer caring if he were miserable without her, and no longer wondering if she could make him suffer anymore. None of it mattered!
Chaos dipped her down low, till she swore she was about to crash to the floor, but his arms gripped her lower back and tugged her up, holding her carefully with a fluid and all too surprising grace that she never would have expected come from the young brainiac.
There was some unwritten rule now, standing between the two of them. Some clear, invisible line. No talking, no ruining the experience with questions and conversation. The music whispered through the two of them gently, connecting them in graceful dips and long twisting rolls of hips, toes that brushed against one and other, and fingers that held firmly clasped like the warm heart beat that throbbed in between the two of them. It was a dance she would never forget, and one that echoed on long past the end of the night. Finally, sadly, the music was over, the dance stopped, and the school burst into cheers and wild applause. Chaos and Rhubella took a few nervous bows and returned towards the tables and punch with Rhubella actually skipping.
“Oh my GOSH that was amazing! I didn’t know you knew how to dance! UGH, I wanna do it again! Hehehe, oh, wow, oh wow! What else can you do?!” Ruby chirped happily, forcing Chaos to blush as they sat down quietly at a table. Elated as he was, however, he knew it wouldn’t last. The boy reached across the table quietly and took Rhubella’s fingers in his own and squeezed them softly, a soft, glittering smiled twisting across his features.
“I’m glad you’re having a really good time…at first I thought you just wanted something from me but now I see…that you….really…like me…” Chaos muttered when he caught the look in Rhubella’s eyes. He didn’t know what the sound of depression was, but he was sure it sounded a look like the sigh that was running through his ears. He looked away sadly and closed his eyes, letting go of her fingers. He was a fool to think she wanted him for anything other than his brains.
“…it’s my midterm…” She said softly. Chaos simply nodded his head, an empty sensation forming in the pit of his stomach. Midterm math homework, social studies project…it was all the same.
“Sure…I’ll…I’ll get right on that…I’ll need to uh…I’ll need to…change your grade on the school computer…no big deal…be right back.” He muttered darkly, standing up, before Rhubella reached out and grasped his wrist.
“P, promise me you’ll dance with me one last time…?”
“….Gotta do it now, or else it won’t get done. I’ve got a curfew…but I’ll be back for the last dance. Promise. Gotta make you look good at the end of the night! “He laughed, but all Rhubella could hear was the sadness in his voice. She bit her lower lip, reaching out to him as he walked away, but didn't say a word, and silently she watched as he snuck out of the ballroom towards the computer labs.
From the other side of the ballroom, the quarterback for the Prefecto Prep football team watched too; Roderick Rat, and he quietly pointed to Johnny Howler, who also snuck out of the ballroom as well...
