second day, second chapter :)
“Come on Fenrir, cheer up a bit!”
“There’s nothing to cheer about, Gellen. I’d appreciate if you’d simply stop talking to me.” The big man replied in a flat tone.
Not everyone wore the hood elegantly. But the thin, one pieced clothe covering everything and shadowing his face gave him quite a mysterious look. It helped that he also was quite above the average stature. Gellen found this guy intriguing. There were so many rumors about him. To the point the young shifter was the only one of his generation asking for him as a supervisor, others shunned him like plague. For this reason, precisely, the young man hoped he would at least feel thankful.
But no… always the same, like a soulless puppet. There was no doubt he would obey his duty, but there was no joy or excitement in him. No life. He walked, step after step, carrying the same old dragon skull under his arm. He was known to carry this thing everywhere he went, and the reason was well known.
“But talking a bit will make this a bit more fun. Do you know you’re some kind of a legend?”
“I don’t care about what others say about me. And I surely don’t want to make this more fun. I expect you to find this as boring and useless as I do.”
Still the same despising words, again and again. Did this guy had any other mood in stock, ever? No wonder why no one even tried to reach him. He was kind of uninteresting when talked to. Who wanted to get scolded for trying?
“They say, the only time you got defeated was a day you lowered your guard, and they had to ambush you four at once. And that you still put on a good fight.”
“Boring gossips. But if you want to keep your fantasy alive for next time you’ll get screwed by one of your comrades, I won’t blame you.”
Acidic reply that made the young man frown under his hood. It was in times like this that the large covering hood proved useful. Gellen would have hated to let this man see that he managed to anger him.
“Are you saying you think I get screwed by my comrades?”
“I only implied that you probably don’t get the handsome ones. But given your reaction, I’m starting to believe you don’t even get the ugly ones. Do yourself a favor kid, and spare me the questions and the fan thingy. Now give me your spear.”
Fenrir lifted a hand in his direction, a gesture that was clearly an order, void of any form of respect. Unfriendly would have been a euphemism when it came to him, the young man began to understand how wrong he had been to give him a chance. He treated him like a dummy, just because he had the right as a supervisor. If it was up to Gellen, he would have given him the spear… by shoving it where the sun never shined. But this was too important for the shifter to let it up to anger.
With a nonchalant move, he gave the spear to the ‘legend’ that clearly didn’t deserve the title. A jerk that hadn’t respect for anyone. But in this rite of passage, he had to comply to the weirdness of his supervisor. He already regretted his choice.
“I do not get screwed by my comrades. I go to Southernheim whenever I want to, like everyone.”
“Hey I don’t judge. Since you heard so much about me, you probably know I’m the most open minded on the matter. And let’s say it, you behave like a chief but look like a victim however tough you think you are. You must be prized meat in the military baths.“
Wordless, Gellen watched him stop when they got out of the forest. This was just plain mean; the young man wasn’t blind. A childish attitude, just to hurt him. If anything, he was worthy of his reputation of jerk. Fenrir didn’t even care about him; He clearly didn’t want to be here and passed his frustration on him. Maybe had he been wrong to think he was so mysterious. He was just empty. And ridiculously pathetic.
The big man gazed at the mountain in the distance for a few seconds, there were still a few kilometers to walk to reach their destination. Then, Fenrir planted the spear in the soil. It didn’t seem like he put much strength, but the tip of the spear plunged easily into the dry ground, only leaving the wooden stick unearthed. Like a ritual, the big man put the dragon skull on it, hanging the grim object face turned to the mountain.
“Look, there’s no need to be rude. You’re surely aware that the insults coming from someone as weird as you have no value.” Gellen underlined
“Another reason to not stop. If it has no value then it doesn’t change anything if I keep going and I should be the one sounding stupid, right? What’s more I like to talk freely. That’s what you wanted, talking. Make up your mind.”
“You don’t even have any reason to be mean to me. I tried to be nice to you, to give you a chance, and that’s how you treat me! You are the disgraced one, you should be glad that there are guys like me to try and help you!”
Fenrir bowed to the crafted ornament and walked passed him without even throwing him a look. It was so exasperating to deal with such a cold and aggressive man.
“It would be nice if people stop trying to help me when I don’t want to be helped. What they think to be best for me has always been my living hell. And let’s be clear. The fact you are here, in free will, is reason enough for me to consider you like a piece of shit. But you asked me to be your supervisor, and I will do what I must. That’s the only reason I’m here.”
“It’s supposed to make you feel good! It’s well known that being supervisor is the dream task to be assigned to! You are only asked to not intervene, and you can do all you want while the surveyed completes his task! Anyone would prefer that to the common routine!”
“Anyone but me. I feel more useful in the city, and I hate wasting my time. So whether you like it or not, I’ll keep to the core of my task while you do yours, and nothing more. We are not buddies, and I have absolutely no respect for you. If you want this to remain a good experience for you, do the wise thing and stop talking to me.”
Gellen sighed. There was no way to win against someone who remained hidden behind a wall of hate and despise as only argument, like he hid his face under the hood. Well, this part of the experience didn’t turn as interesting as he thought.
“I only hoped it could be a bit less morose…” the young man replied, walking behind him. Now some distance made him more at ease. And since he opened hostilities, they could be two to play this game. Gellen knew one subject that was a bit ticklish. “We’re about to kill dragons after all!”
“And I see nothing great about it. Waste of time and skills. And if you can’t shut up, the next topic will be how small a man’s pride must be to feel excited about this.”
Gellen gave up. Many times rumors could turn untrue and silly, but he had to recognize this one had solid foundations. Fenrir was a weirdo, and quite an unpleasant one with that. There was no point in talking with him, he could go get lost in his lonely life after this! It wasn’t like he cared that much. He only hoped to discover some depths in this guy, but there was nothing to dig in.
And it would spoil the pleasure of the event if he focused too much on this waste! It was his great day, he wouldn’t let this rude man ruin everything! What’s more, it was the first time he would put his blade to such thrilling use!
Suddenly, there was a quake. Not coming from earth, rather like a wave in the air. By his reaction, Fenrir felt it too. The big man stopped his lifeless walk and turned, gazing over the trees, in the direction of the south.
“That wasn’t a shifter…” he commented.
“Duh. Obviously. Maybe a special?” Gellen replied coldly.
“Not any I know of, in that case. That could be interesting.”
Gellen lost patience. He would have gone checking himself, but he certainly didn’t want to concede that to his lame supervisor. He wanted to hurt him, in return for his insults. It wasn’t much, but at least it would teach him there were consequences for being a jerk!
Not leaving any room for debate, the young shifter walked passed him, imposing the direction to take. Because that was his only power on him. And he would use it.
“It’s a shame we are assigned to a task then.” He spat with a barely contained satisfaction.
“Sticking to the task. I got it. I shall watch and don’t intervene, in that case. For the good and the worst.”
Gellen sighed in rage under his hood. Fenrir didn’t sound the least disappointed or hurt. He didn’t care. Like with everything else. It was best to leave him in his pathetic misery. He wasn’t worth it. And the young shifter had so much to focus on right now…
