A direct continuation of Fire Song, beginning the REAL story of Gideon. According to the Firebirds of Scrubbley Librarium, Gideon was the first Firebird. He's a Fenixfier in this, but he does fall in love at one point and raises a family.
Picks up immediately after Fire Song.
Fenixfier (Fee – Nicks – Fyer) : Dragontongue word for Phoenixes in human mythology. Literally translates as ‘Bird of Fire.’ Distantly related to the Firebirds of Co:pern:ica.
When I decided to continue writing the story of Gideon, I also decided to change the name. The short story name, however, will remain the same since its plot is directly related to his Fire Song.
Throughout this story, you will find plenty of references to Phoenixes and just how different they are from human myths regarding them. In fact, literally the only thing they got right was that Phoenixes are reborn from their ashes after they die. Fenixfiers in TLDC are very different, far more complex than the rainbow-colored birds of myth. Much like their Firebird cousins they guard the timeline and keep it on its correct course, but they’re very kind-hearted birds, just as frequently ending a dying animal’s suffering or nursing it back to health as tearing apart a Darkling. They are life-bringers, hate Ix with a vengeance, and are loyal to a fault. Dragons once believed the passing of a Fenixfier could restore a burnt forest to life, its ashes absorbed into and nourishing the scorched soil.
As for how they’re created…only the fire of a true dragon, combined with the pure soul of a loyal bird can create a Fenixfier. Dragons had employed eagles for thousands of years (similar to the relationship between Sybils and ravens) and only bestowed this gift upon their most loyal servants. No one knows how to TRULY kill one, but with the disappearance of the dragons they have completely vanished from the world. The Firebirds of Co:pern:ica are believed to be an offshoot of the Fenixfiers, a natural-born race of fiery avians known for their love of books and tendency to live in libraries.
I drew from plenty of sources of inspiration for this story, including various mythos in real life and in books, not to mention the actual canonical story of Gideon after his first death.

...but this...this is not the end of my story...
...it is only the beginning.
The first sensation I felt was heat, a pulsing flame deep within me - a fire within that I should not have possessed. Only dragons were blessed with that fiery core. The heat spread and I felt the urge to open my eyes...
For the first time in a long time, I saw the sky with perfect clarity. I felt invigorated, my body like that of a yearling. I felt strong, powerful again, like I could fly anywhere and do ANYTHING. I looked around and saw the girl staring at me bewildered, the boy beside her with the same expression.
I looked down at myself, expecting to see scales and paws...and saw instead bright golden feathers, ablaze in a blinding light. My talons were sharp as daggers, though it felt awkward to grip dirt rather than a branch. I did not know what I had become at first, I was no bird i had ever seen before, but as I pieced together the facts my heart soared as realization finally dawned on me.
I had heard legends of this phenomenon but never believed them to be true – or that Gawaine had held me in such high regard. This honor was meant only for the most loyal, most devoted of a dragon’s eagles, to be reborn in the purity of dragon fire as a Fenixfier – a Phoenix, as humans called them. She meant for her son to carry out the ritual, so that I could gaze upon him with my old eyes before my world changed forever.
I no longer felt death’s grip on me, no longer gasped for every breath, no longer felt my wings were made of lead…and it felt AMAZING. I spread my majestic wings and took to the air, to test out my new body. I WOULD return, this wearling would need loyal eagles of his own in time, but for now I had a whole new view of the world to enjoy.
I sang a new song into the morning light as I flew, a song of joy and rebirth. My old life was over, and my new life had just begun.
