About a month ago a friend of mine was surprised to find out my relationship had a very rocky start.
"You and Buck? I thought you guys never fought! Ya'll seem like a power couple!," She said.
I laughed and took it as a compliment. We do not air our dirty laundry and tha'ts just how we are.
Then, just a few days ago, I had to stand up at another friends wedding. All the bridesmaids and the bride were having a mini toast in the dressing room and everyone was saying such lovely things. Such as "I wish you happiness always!", "Big adventures are what make a relationship!", "Always be there for each other!", etc.
It came to my turn and I told her, "Don't take the little things for granted. The silly inside jokes, the stupid stuff that makes you laugh, the quiet talks in the dark are things you will also need."
I didnt get to finish because all the girls dawww'd and got all emotional, and then the next girl spoke up. What I wanted to say last was, "And remember that you are two different people."
There is no such thing as perfect. Sure, there are a few out there that might not ever argue but when you are in each others faces every day, sharing every thought and opinion, feeling each others emotions, even accidentally misunderstanding each others emotions, a disagreement is bound to happen. You are going to argue and it will get out of control sometimes....
Yet, its the stepping back, rethinking what was said and felt, and coming together again to figure out what was wrong and either fixing it or 'agreeing to disagree'. Thats the work part of the relationship everyone is always talking about.
It's hard. It really is. Especially when you find out and have to admit that you have some really toxic tendencies that you, ONLY YOU, have to fix if you want to keep the other person. The other person has to be open and realize they have to fix their problems too if they have issues of their own.
I'm not saying stick to a bad relation because it might work. No. If there is ZERO compromise then get the fuck out! BUT you will KNOW when you have something good and when its worth the very real, very difficult, effort.
This is us and we are not perfect, but that is perfect for me.
