It's a point of contention with lots of Sonic fans, you see, because typically if you say you prefer the US soundtrack you're a moron with no taste. Not true, I like both soundtracks (I grew up with the US one, so it's hard for me NOT to like it). But I do think the JP soundtrack has probably held up better over time, especially the opening and ending themes.
