Ruto doesn't get enough love. Even in TP she probably got killed. ;_;

Well, Twilight Princess does take place decades or centuries after Ocarina of Time.

TP did give us Midna. <3 But in that game, it's shown that Ganondorf destroys the Sage of Water, so if it's not Ruto's descendant it's probably Ruto herself. ;_;

She was likely long dead before TP even started. TP takes place in the child timeline and thus she didn't awaken as a sage. Hence why it's some weird white dude that dies, not Ruto.

Okay, this would make more sense if it was Lulu, not Ruto there. As Lulu is convinced (as is every other Zora in Majora's Mask) that Zora Link is Mikau, who died against a pirate. The injuries were probably really bad (only the Zelda Majora's Mask manga shows the climax of that lost fight, which the manga is inaccurate) but the tainted water affecting his open wounds is probably what finished him. (No open wounds can be seen in-game, but it's a kid's game, as dark it is) Or maybe he just drank too much of the tainted water when being stuck unable to move in the water. Regardless, he only had a few moments to live by the time Link had come. No matter how many times Link played the Song of Time, there was no time for him to make it there quick enough to save his life... 3 people died in the course of the the game...and Link could not save them... I wonder what Lulu's and Mikau's life could've been if Mikau had survived... They had 7 children to take care of after all... Freaking Majora! It's bad enough you are gonna kill everyone with the Moon, but the fact that you used Skull Kid as a puppet to lie to the pirates which ruined two Zora's love life is stooping too low, even for a monster that is gonna destroy the world with the Moon!
