Started and finished within the day. Might not be the best habit to roll with but I'm getting comfortable with exterior lighting so it's working well for me.

$alpha is a material (.VMT) parameter that affects the transparency of the material/texture it is applied to. Adding "$alpha 0" or "$alpha 1" to a VMT will make that VMT's texture transparent if it has the right shader (such as vertexlitgeneric). Another parameter handles shadows, so $alpha simply affects textures. Transparency can be managed between 0 and 1 by changing the value anywhere between 0 or 1 (such as 0.5 or 0.75)
