Second supplementary image for my contribution to the anthology Encounters of the Imaginary Vol. 3! Here the forgotten gargoyle sobs its tears into the night, with only the fireflies witness to its sorrow... or so it believes.
If you guys are interested in a book full of the stories and artwork of over 40 other amazing creature artists, check it out here: https://www.kickstarter.com/project.....inary-volume-3
I'll soon submit the rest of the works that accompany this one as well as the story.
For now, here's a bit of flavor text from the passage:
“ The moon peeked around a break in clouds, and though now free of its prison of vines, the beast looked even more melancholy than it had in the light of day. Tears soaked the stone beneath its eyes and dripped slowly from its dog-like nose. Its frozen expression was strained with grief, brow furrowed, water spout filled with leaves and debris, and claws gripping tightly to its perch. The creature looked so woeful, that Tom couldn’t help but pity the poor thing. "

It's plain that these creatures have sparked something very special in your imagination, and I can only salute the creativity and emotion you bring to their story. There is so much storytelling potential here, and it's got me really intrigued to discover where you take this next. There is a pervading melancholy in your images and text - why are the gargoyles unhappy? Were they crafted for the abbey, and if so, how did they come alive? They can obviously move around, but are they perhaps bound to the abbey's grounds?
The image itself is, or course, gorgeous.
The image itself is, or course, gorgeous.
This is so beautiful, yet so heartbreaking it makes me cry. I also realize there are two ways to interpret this. One , that the gargoyle was crafted to look this way, with drains where tear ducts would be to produce the desired effect after it had collected water after a rain. and Two, that the poor creature really is alive and possesses a tortured soul.
For me, I am compelled to believe the second idea.
