No, the barrier acts automatically if I am in any form of danger. The artifact that produces it has its own consciesness and wants to keep me safe. Combined with the informative powers of one of my other arm, it would know exactly when to protect me and can modulate the barrier to any form or shape, so in effect, it can mold itself around me completely into a protective shell to keep his surprise attacks from working.
