Hung near the back left corner of the office, nestled between two bookcases, was a dark
wooden frame surrounding Erica's most cherished picture. She and David stood side by side,
embracing, her in her Army fatigues and he in his Grant City Police Department dress
blues. He pressed them and wore them that day simply because he knew how much she
loved how he looked in them. Little David Junior, only two years old and cute as a button
in his denim overalls, had wrapped his arms around his mother's leg with a wide smile. It
wasn't their most glamorous family picture...but it was still her favorite. She
remembered how she felt coming home after months overseas and seeing the two of them
standing there. How it felt to be soothed by the warmth of David's embrace and have his
Old Spice wash over her. How it felt to lift little David into her arms and kiss his soft
headfur while he giggled. After so long in a lonely, dangerous battleground, she didn't
know to what depths happiness could touch her until she was with them again.
Slowly, Erica drew her fingers down along the smooth glass, over their faces...

I've been waiting for a good time to post this picture. With City of Thorns Chapter 3 on the way, I thought it would be a good accompaniment to the emotional struggle Erica is undergoing in that story. I was always struck by the look of happiness on her face in this picture, made poignant by the loss that was soon to follow.

Memories, memories. Sweet, sweet memories. Of days gone by, that make me cry.
Memories, memories, memories Sweet memories.
That make me sad. They take me back.

This brings tears to my eyes.
