Sculpey is fun to use. I haven't used it in ages.
As for photographing, try using a solid colored background and less bright light (no flash). I always use natural light when I can. That's what I find works anyway. Play around with the lighting and the background till you get an effect you like.

Try a mat background and a solid background. It will help with the lighting oddly enough. You want something that won't reflect light.
I know what you mean about stormy weather, we are having an amazing amount of rain in Texas so I have had some interesting lighting effects to contend with, but in Texas a good bit of rain is worth a little bit of photographic headache.
