Yeah, VW used a zinc-based coating on the blocks; it caused electrolitic corrossion. Oops. This van had its engine rebuilt with fresh gaskets and no zinc about 30k miles ago so for all the things that can go wrong the head gaskets are hopefully not one of them.
Also because of the boxer engine and spacious engine bay you can actually change the head gaskets without a huge amount of equipment.
