I used to have one of those! Mine was harvest orange and white. Is yours air cooled, or a water cooled model? That body style had one year of being air cooled, then switched to the water cooled motor.

My family had one of those when I was a kid. It was an 87 syncro as well! Even the same maroon color. Cool! It was the first thing I ever drove..

However, the mechanical issues are manyfold. THe headgasket I remember being particular evil.

Yeah, VW used a zinc-based coating on the blocks; it caused electrolitic corrossion. Oops. This van had its engine rebuilt with fresh gaskets and no zinc about 30k miles ago so for all the things that can go wrong the head gaskets are hopefully not one of them.

Also because of the boxer engine and spacious engine bay you can actually change the head gaskets without a huge amount of equipment.

Step # Racing stripes and flame decals (you'll get there faster)

The T3 is pretty safe compared to the older models. Also being essentially *in* the crumple zone gives me extra incentive to keep alert and keep my eyes on the road!
