The Witch and her Companions were making grand chaos throughout the carnival but all were totally oblivious to what was happening. No one questioned what became of Colby, nobody thought about where all the horses appeared from around the merry-go-round, not a single question was asked about the sudden increase in tigers in the petting cages, and even the junior petting zoo's unaccounted animal parents and new younglings was ignored. All of this was according to the Wandering Witch's design, and now while the new lioness Arthur tended to her cubs, she was off to see the show of a lifetime.
In the center of the carnival was the large tent, blinking with flashing lights and cutouts of exotic animals everywhere. It was hard to miss, covering a large part of the festivity grounds. The Wandering Witch was no good at math, but she estimated a good few hundred people could be seated there to spectate the show. That would be a sight to watch, if all went according to plan.
Before anything when she arrived, she and Micah had a brief talk with the lion tamer there, who she germinated the first seeds of change within him. When his performance would start, the crowd would explode into a menagerie of eager, horny cats. Part of her could almost envision the crowd sprouting tails, clawing at the benches and yowling for food, sex and even cuddling. She'd seen it before all the same many times in all the centuries she'd been alive, but it still brought enough sensation to her to know she hadn't become emotionally desensitized to her work.
When she arrived, however, she was disappointed and relieved to see that his show had not yet started. What was transpiring from above at the top of the tent, instead, was a group of trapeze artists. How novel, these acrobats. She seemed almost ready to erupt into anger as she took her seat in one of the nearest empty chairs.
Nicky and Joseph, however, took a proactive approach to all this. Their Mistress was not always keen on waiting to be entertained, even though they'd hoped she would've burned through the crowd at the junior petting zoo much slower. Fortunately, they had perched themselves atop one of the pillars as the acrobats waved to the audience, the tent roaring with their applause. They remained hidden in the dark, not making their presence known except for small caws of instructions to these perfomers to help speed along the show.
“Oh, they must be quite the bats, Nicky, to be so acrobatic,” Joseph said, barely able to hold back his cawing laughter.
“Don't break their focus, Joseph. They need to concentrate.” Nicky playfully scowled at her corvine brother, gently hitting him with her wing. “After all, it's not easy to fly when they're being so batty.”
The two of them could go on with the bat puns, but the trapeze artists were already swinging across from beam to beam, doing their midair twirls and spins to the audience's delight. The words that were spoken to them, however, lingered and took root, and while it had no bearing on the show, they found that being in the air almost felt natural to them.
Nicky gasped as he saw one of them wave to the people down below. She had leathery flaps spreading along her arms. All of them were growing very large ears with brown fur spreading along their necks. From across the other side, Joseph could make out that one of the acrobats had lost her eyesight, yet she could somehow still see everything. To a bat, Joseph thought, echolocation was likely far superior for seeing than normal vision.
The acrobats, upon their third rotation through the zoo, then let out an inhuman screech as they bared their fangs to the crowd, their new claws digging into the trapeze beneath. No longer using their hands, they perched themselves along the swings as they spread their leathery wings. Their size dwindled rapidly more and more and their uniforms glided down towards the ground. The Wandering Witch's magic disentegrated them before it ever reached it. Then the new swarm of bats flew circles around the audience before they quickly exited out of the tent, off to find insects and dark places to roost in until the sun went down.
To the audience down below, however, this was a spectacle unlike anything they'd ever seen before. The Wandering Witch was almost ready to have to extend her power again to keep her prey in control, but there was no need. The audience applauded twice as strong as when the stars first appeared. She looked up above and saw the Crow Twins wave down at her. They would be treated for helping her later. If there was anything she couldn't stand, it was being bored.
A voice now roared in excitement across an unseen speaker, saying, “Now, Ladies and Gentlemen, we present to you Eramis, our incomparable Lion Tamer!”
