while going through my storage a few days ago, I ran across a stack of sketches I had done up to late 2007, just before I moved to my current apartment, and at the time they were full of sketches of the Asheru Characters, as I was trying to hash out their story. Here we see the Lupine Virinia, conferring with the human Imperial senior officer, on Military matters. Both are wearing cuirass and plastron armor, over chain shirts. Virinia is dramatically abbreviated at the waist, though. her excuse is that she wants maximum mobility to be able to supervise her troops, but it's really so her troops keep her eyes on her, so they know who she is yelling at. IOt sounds like you are focusing on the details, rather than the overall form. Armour has it's structure and anatomy, the same as organic creatures. You just start with the biggest forms, and work out the details by size downward. You don't see the riveting on these loose sketches, much, but it's basically taking large forms of stiff material, and bending and cutting it in a way it won't limit movement too much. How does creature X fight? What movements does it make? what are the areas where a weapons strike or an arrow (or bullt), incapacitate them? Cover it with armor as much as economically probable, Only add detail when you want to finish it.
The "flowy approach" was due to animation training. what is the character thinking? what actions or gestures will that thought motivate the body to do? draw that pose super loose, and then add anatomy and costume (armor) over it. But work the gesture and pose out with minimal lines and stick figures, so if it doesn't work, or it just sucks, you don't have to erase much, and start again.
The "Magnus Enraged" sketch is super loose. His thought was "I'm gonna cut a bitch!", and he;'s spectacularly pissed off, But you see, he hasn't forgotten his training, and has his shield covering everything but his head and his sword arm. That sketch is super loose, but the fundamentals are all there. Not a lot of detail.
