Something a little different this time around!! I've been incredibly busy with my job and internship but in a couple of days everything will slow down quite a bit and I'll be posting more frequently.. BUT! Inbetween jobs and just to kind of relax I've been redoing my two biggest tarantulas' tanks, which also meant trying out a new type of backer- painted!! I don't post a lot about my animals but I've been experimenting with expanding foam tank backs and trying to get a handle on the different techniques I can use. These are the first real paintings I've ever done and all things considered I think they turned out pretty good? Also I just needed to upload something to prove I wasn't dead lmao
Curly hairs are native to the tropical scrublands of Costa Rica, staying in a more temperate part of the area with a lot less jungle and a lot more sand. I focused on a sort of embankment with a lot of exposed red clay to play off of the red clay burrow in the tank's hardscape. Texas browns are native to the southern and midwestern United States, so I reflected that with a fall woodland scene. Both of these were really fun to do, I take a lot of inspiration for my enclosures from zoos and other experienced animal workers. I'll probably do one for my communal millipede tank in the near future, so that'll be fun!!
These are done in acrylic craft paint and my tarantulas are housed in the Exo Terra Nano Wide terrariums

Aw thanks!!!!! Yeah before I just had the foam backers that came with the tanks in there, but I wanted to give them just a little more space and try making my own backers, it's so fun making something for your pets like this
And ohhhh exciting!! What kind of tarantula are you thinking about :0

OOOOH both very good... my curly hair was my first tarantula. I've heard they make a good first because of how docile they are. Mine's a really good eater and very energetic. I've heard pink toes can be a little tricky since theyre a bit more skittery than others but I still think it would be a good first! Keeping tarantulas is so fun and rewarding I love it... I have a green bottle blue sling that I didn't make a backer for cause he's still very small and not in his permanent tank but hes beauuuutiful
Yesss, I was reading that. ;;
The care instructions asked for more vertical tanks, higher humidity, and patience for pink toes.
My roomie has a curly hair right now, and she has been so much fun to take care of and watch. We are wondering if she had molted when we weren't looking, but never could find a molt [her tank wasn't even that big, she couldnt have hidden it]. So either she ate it???? Or is still waiting to do so.

She probably hasn't molted then, my curly hair molted right after I got her and I was really anxious because she holed herself up in the burrow and I didn't see her for two whole weeks!! There are some ways to tell if a tarantula is getting ready to molt though! Refusal of food is a big one, and they will also start building web mats on the ground, which usually just look like big clumps of substrate. The biggest giveaway though is the appearance of a bald patch on the abdomen. Sorry if you know all this already I just get excited about tarantulas djsnsmxn
If she did already molt the shed may have gotten destroyed, especially if she's an avid builder. I haven't ever heard of tarantulas eating their sheds so she's probably still in premolt

She has had a bald spot on her abdomen for a while actually, and she just now started building a burrow. We had made her one, but she didn't like it much and instead tunneled NEXT to it XD
I'll put some crickets in her tank and see how she feels about them. Now that she has the burrow, she hides in it during the day and comes out at night. She even webbed up the entrance with dirt.
[and no, I am a new owner, just use the good ol' google and tarantula videos on youtube!]

Oh! Then she's absolutely about to molt. Before she molts she'll probably disappear for a few days and then reemerge in a clean new carapace to show off
And yeah I LOVE tarantula youtube!! TheDarkDen is my favorite channel for it, also TarantulaKat lives in the same city as me and comes into the pet store where I work to buy stuff all the time haha
