Sorry for the lack of updates, I just noticed it was more than a week without any, so I stopped what I was doing to put this together.
Something I didn't liked about 3D tails, was that they shaped the tail with geometry and then cover it with fur, while real tail are a thin flesh part, with long hair, so I tried to create a more accurate tail, and I quite like the result.

I have made a flamethrower. Unfortunately it wasn't based on the tail, but perhaps in the future I'll undertake that enterprise.
Much less than I expected, turns out with long hair I don't need that many hairs. When doing fur, I need about 100,000 hair to decently cover the model, but with long hair I can go as low as 10,000 and it still looks good.
This particular render has 20,000 hairs, and it took my computer 9.7 seconds to render, much less than I expected, so I'm quite happy with it.
