In Indian and Hindu legends, nāgas (female, nāgi) are water shape-shifting creatures sometimes looking like a human with the lower body of a snake, sometimes like snake or a cobra with several heads (the nāga has an odd number, the nāgi an even number), sometimes like a snake or a cobra with human arms and bust, sometimes like a human with several snake or cobra heads. Benevolent, they are the immortal guardians of the treasures of Earth and nature, the link between heavens and Earth and the living world and the Other Side, associated to rainbows, and bring prosperity, fecundity to women and fertility to lands. They also exist in Cambodia legends in which they fly, travel underground and disguise themselves as humans.
