so basically the diverging point of this universe is the sinking of the titanic. here a distress signal reached another ship and many more people survived. a classic case of a simple what if and it's butterfly effect.

guess they got rid of the lifetime limitation

there was a rule (though broken a few times) that Sam could only time travel "within his own lifetime," so he couldn't be sent to prehistoric times or the future. This also helped keep costs down.
