If he's treating this like a normal battle then and use another Pokémon in his place, this could give Cole a chance to turn things around when everyone else is knocked out or tired. Otherwise there could be another reason he did that, but no matter what Cole and Tarrant(whoa, that's a real name? I didn't get spell checked for it.) had something going on between them and now it's something they can't settle on, especially since Tarrant is not allowed to be switched... I think.
Brian took his first smart decision as a trainer, OH MY GOOOOD !!
Cole is cute and all, standing on his high-ground, but ultimately it was Brian's decision to take on the gym, and he does it for his own Pokémon journey, not to settle scores. So shut up and get back in that ball, Cole !
Loosing his best fighter to exhaustion on the first round would be a terrible tactical mistake. Switching instead of playing the pom-pom girl 'power of friendship' card is the first real step Brian took in growing as a trainer !
