-Iniko-
-Name Meaning: Born during troubled times.
-Sex: Male
-Biological Mother: Vitani (deceased)
-Biological Father: Kion
-Adoptive Mother: Kiara
-Adoptive Father: Kovu
-Adoptive Siblings: Amani and Uzima
-Uncle (maternal): Kovu
-Aunt (paternal): Kiara
-Uncle (paternal): Kopa (deceased)
-Cousins: Amani and Uzima
-Grandparents (maternal): Tama (deceased) and Tojo
-Grandparents (paternal): Nala (deceased) and Simba
-Personality: Iniko is a friendly, kind, and fiercely loyal young lion. He loves his family above all else, and although he’s generally friendly to everyone he meets, he can quickly turn fierce if you threaten someone he loves. He has an insatiable curiosity, and although undeniably intelligent, his enthusiasm can sometimes override his common sense. The very definition of an extrovert, Iniko loves to be involved in whatever is going on, and is never short on enthusiasm. He seems to understand things on a different level, noticing tiny details while seemingly disregarding things other lions can’t seem to get past. For instance, he would approach a lion with a mutilated face and compliment them on the unique colors in their mane. Because of this, some have come to believe he’s a bit of an airhead, but this obviously isn’t the case. He has the patience of a saint, and really only loses his temper if you hurt someone he loves. He’s more aware than other lions seem to understand, and he sees and feels more than most.
-History: Vitani had taken comfort in Kion after the death of her mother, Zira, but she knew in her heart that he would never love her the same way she loved him. His first and only love was the Guard, and nothing would dissuade him from that. Still, she couldn’t stay away from him, and eventually fell pregnant. Unsure of how Kion would react, she elected not to tell him right away. She did, however, share the news with her brother, Kovu, and his mate, Princess Kiara, who were expecting cubs of their own. They both urged Vitani to tell Kion the truth, but the determined lioness maintained that she would do so when the time was right. Then came the day that would tear the royal family apart. Heavy rains had put stress on the dam which kept the river from overflowing, and Kiara ordered Kion to take the Lion Guard and fix it before it burst and flooded the low plains where the herds grazed. Kion argued that the dam was unstable and it would be too dangerous, so they should instead move the herds to higher ground. Kiara didn't budge, saying assembling all the herds and convincing them to move to unsheltered ground in bad weather would take too long and increase the risk of casualties, if they were able to do it at all. The two both argued their points, but Simba ultimately agreed with his daughter and told Kion to listen to her. Kion was angry, but eventually did as he was told at the urging of the other members of the Guard. He had no way of knowing just how much he would come to regret that decision. The Guard went to patch the dam in the pouring rain, when the pressure from the swollen river finally became too much and the wall of logs and stones burst open. Kion, who had been working highest up on the dam, managed to cling to the wall of the cliff and climb to safety. The rest of the Guard were not so lucky, and were swept away by the torrent of water. Kion was helpless to intervene as he saw their terrified faces disappear into the dark, churning water. Those that weren't crushed by the falling debris drowned in the rushing river, and in the following days their bodies would be discovered at various spots along the banks. The day the last body was found, Kion waited until Simba and Kovu went out for a nightly patrol, and then returned to Pride Rock to confront his sister. The fight escalated and Kion eventually lost his temper and leapt at her. Nala, fearing that her son would badly injure his pregnant sister, leapt in between them. Kion’s full bodyweight barreled into her and she was pushed off the edge of Pride Rock. Simba and Kovu, alerted by the noise, returned just in time to see Nala fall to her death. Kion was horrified and ran to his mother’s body, but there was nothing that could be done for her. Simba demanded to know what Kion had done, and Kion insisted it was an accident. Confronted by his deepest, darkest fear, Kion fled into self-imposed exile at the edge of the Outlands. In the following days, Kiara gave birth to her two cubs, Amani and Uzima. She urged her father to tell Kion that Nala’s death was not his fault, but Simba, broken by the death of his mate, did not seem able to forgive his son. Vitani, now nearing the end of her pregnancy, decided enough was enough and was determined to slap some sense into Kion. Unbeknownst to her brother, she went to the Outlands to bring Kion home. But Kion, convinced he was a monster who had murdered his own mother, would not listen to reason. The argument between them became heated, and Kion eventually attacked Vitani and threw her against a cliff face. In his panic Kion was convinced that he had killed her, and abruptly fled the scene. Vitani was then left to stumble back towards Pride Rock as her body was wracked with violent contractions. Kovu, alerted to Vitani’s absence by her close friends, Chuki and Kehinde, decided to go with them to look for her. He found his sister dragging herself across the savannah, her hindquarters seeped with blood and a newborn cub held feebly in her jaws. A warrior until the end, Vitani had pushed herself through unimaginably pain to get her son to safety. She collapsed as soon as she saw her brother, telling him what Kion had done, and saying that he was too far gone and must never know about his son. Kovu begged for her to hold on, saying that they could take her to Rafiki and make her well again, but Vitani said it was too late. She asked her brother to take care of her son, and he agreed just before she lay her head down and took her last breath. Kovu carried Vitani’s body on his back all the way back to Pride Rock, while Chuki carried the tiny cub. There they gave them the news about what had happened, and Kiara agreed that she and Kovu would be the cub’s parents from then on. They named the cub Iniko, a name meaning “born during troubled times”, and decided that he would be made to believe he had been born alongside Amani and Uzima. They also agreed that the Lion Guard had well and truly ended. It’s dark history had become too much to overcome, and they ultimately decided that it must be left in the past. Simba, unable to let go of Nala’s death, later stepped down as king, leaving his daughter to inherit the throne. Kion remained in exile, and the lion in the Outlands became a figure which all cubs were taught to avoid. That is, until the curiosity of one young cub leads him back down a familiar road towards a lion he’s never known and a truth he may not yet be ready to discover.
-Random Facts-
-His mane style is based loosely off of early concept art of Simba.
-Is closest to his adoptive father, Kovu. Vitani requested with her dying breaths for Kovu to take care of her son, and Kovu took this very seriously. Although Iniko loves Kiara deeply, Kovu is usually the one he goes to for help or advice.
-Will go from 0 to FIGHT ME in the blink of an eye if you insult someone he loves.
-Does not give a single crap about gender roles, and will frequently decorate his mane with colorful flowers. This started when Uzima began growing tufts of mane and the other cubs teased her for looking like a male, after which Iniko decided that if they made fun of her, they'd have to make fun of him too. It was an added benefit that the flowers made him look so pretty.
-Organized the first all male hunting party in the Pride Lands, consisting of himself, Amani, and Kivuli, in order to prove to prove to Uzima that having a mane wouldn't keep her from being a good hunter.
-Amani-
-Name Meaning: Peace. Named in the hope that his birth would bring an era of peace to the Pridelands following the chaos and heartbreak preceding it.
-Sex: Male
-Mother: Kiara
-Father: Kovu
-Siblings: Uzima (biological) and Iniko (adoptive)
-Uncles (maternal): Kopa (deceased) and Kion
-Aunt (paternal): Vitani (deceased)
-Cousin: Iniko
-Grandparents (maternal): Nala (deceased) and Simba
-Grandparents (paternal): Tama (deceased) and Chumvi
-Personality: Shy, insecure, and reluctant to bring attention to himself, Amani is used to fading into the background. His lack of ability to speak means most lions don't know how to communicate with him, and even his parents sometimes have trouble understanding what he's trying to say. Part of his reluctance to draw attention to himself comes from the pain he always feels when he tries to communicate, only to be met with confusion. It became so frustrating and upsetting to him that he just stopped trying, and instead decided to remain safely passive and undemanding. The only one who seems to consistently understand Amani is his adoptive sibling, Iniko, who has learned to translate everything from paw and tail signals to simple expressions into a clear, understandable language. Iniko has tried teaching this to the rest of his family, with varying degrees of effectiveness. Iniko is one of the few lions Amani will let his guard down in front of, and really the only lion who knows just how much Amani wishes he could say.
-Random Facts-
-Amani is completely mute (unable to speak).
-Amani's mane is very similar to his grandfather, Simba's.
-Amani has always been a bit smaller than your average male, and, like his grandfather, was very late in growing his mane.
-Amani was the firstborn of Kiara and Kovu, and was originally destined to be king. However, when it was discovered that he was unable to speak, his parents decided to instead name Uzima future queen, believing this would make him unable to communicate with his subjects. Amani pretends this doesn't bother him, but it's secretly caused him a lot of heartache, which only Iniko seems to really understand.
-Out of all the cubs, Amani is closest to his grandfather, Simba. Simba took the death of his mate hard, and would frequently isolate himself, forgetting to eat or even move for hours on end. He would simply lay on a crop of stone and stare silently out at the world. Amani took to finding his grandfather and laying beside him. Simba would be more alert when Amani was there, and more conscious of what he did, making it harder for him to pull into himself and become numb to the world. Simba may not be able to understand Amani the way Iniko does, but he loves him dearly and will sometimes tell him stories about the Great Kings of the past.
-Uzima-
-Name Meaning: Full of life. Like her brother, she was named in the hope that new life would bring the Pridelands out of the dark times preceding her birth.
-Sex: Female
-Mother: Kiara
-Father: Kovu
-Siblings: Amani (biological) and Iniko (adoptive)
-Uncles (maternal): Kopa (deceased) and Kion
-Aunt (paternal): Vitani (deceased)
-Cousin: Iniko
-Grandparents (maternal): Nala (deceased) and Simba
-Grandparents (paternal): Tama (deceased) and Chumvi
-Personality: As a young cub Uzima was brimming with confidence. Energetic, outspoken, and, in her mind at least, very mature. She liked to think of herself as being above silly, childish games, and often scoffed at her siblings for their foolishness. She was fully prepared to take on the role of queen someday, and was not shy about bossing other cubs around. Only when she hit adolescence and a genetic defect caused her to grow a mane alongside her brothers did her confidence waver. She became very insecure about this, which was not helped by the fact that many of the lions outside her family (and Zahra in particular) teased her relentlessly about it. She began to wonder if she was never really meant to be leader after all, though she never shared this with anyone but her brother, Iniko. She keeps an authoritative, outspoken attitude, but it is now laced with an underlying fearfulness and insecurity that she did not have in her youth.
-Random Facts-
-Maned lionesses like Uzima actually do occur in nature on rare occasions.
-When she first started growing her mane, other cubs teased her for looking like a male, so she tried pulling it out. Afterwards she was left with painful, scabby, hairless patches, and the cubs teased her for that too. Kiara ordered her daughter not to do it again, for fear that the wounds would become infected, and the mane soon grew back. When stressed she will still occasionally pull out tufts of mane, though not enough for it to be overly noticeable.
-Uzima is one of only two female cubs of her generation born at Pride Rock (all the other cubs were male).
-Uzima inherited the diamond marking on her forehead from her great, great grandmother, Uru.
-Uzima idolizes her mother, dreaming that she might be a great queen like her someday. The two are very close, but the pedestal Uzima has her mother on can occasionally put a strain on their relationship.
-Uzima is also very close with her great grandmother, Sarafina. She is the only one Uzima will occasionally confide in, and she's always willing to be a sympathetic, non-judgmental ear for her great granddaughter.
I was really tired of seeing all of these amazing Lion King artists open for commissions and never having a character for them to draw. So I finally got around to finishing these guys. I’ve been fighting off a nasty case of art block, so instead of drawing these from scratch I just redid some lines I made a couple of years ago fav.me/d8qh1jn. Fun fact, originally Iniko was going to be a side character and Amani (then called Reon) was going to be the main character. I changed my mind about that after falling in love with the way Iniko’s design was turning out.
Anyway, in my headcanon The Lion Guard series is seen through the lens of Kion’s childhood fantasy. So the magical roar, fighting off bad guys as a cub, and extreme importance of the Guard all comes from Kion playing pretend with his cubhood friends. That makes the whole thing easier to accept in the context of the TLK universe, and besides, who didn’t play games like that as a kid? There really is a Guard, but there’s no magic involved. It’s really more like a mix between forest rangers and a police force, where they patrol the Pridelands, settle minor disputes, and report news back to the king or queen. Plus, Kion doesn’t really begin to lead the Guard until he’s a young adult. I’m not sure yet if I want the characters from the series to be part of Kion’s real Lion Guard in this story, or if they all went their own way when they grew up and the Guard really is made up of other lions. For one, I think losing friends he had from cubhood would be more devastating, but at the same time I think losing members of the pride would have a nice domino effect on the story. I guess we’ll see.
Also keep in mind that the characters' grandparents (AKA Vitani and Kovu's parents) are based entirely on my own headcanons. I'm not trying to claim that it's official. I'm only saying that because I know someone's going to be like "That's not who so-and-so's parents are, it's obviously -insert random characters' names here-!!!!" Yeah, the TLK fandom gets a little intense, so I just wanted to cover my bases.
